[Equip] Need Advice - Modem w/WiFi or Separate Router? After dealing with way too mant issues from CenturyTel I am giving them the boot and trying Comcast. They are installing next Saturday and I need to pickup a cable modem. I was looking at a SBG6580 but then was debating on just a basic cable modem, maybe a SB6121 and then picking up a Netgear Router. I have one pc connected via Ethernet cable and everything else in the house is wifi. So based on your experience with Comcast, which is the best way to go? Thanks for the help. Edited to add topic group category. Sunny |

Re: Need Advice - Modem w/WiFi or Separate Router? If you like Motorola why not get the SB6141 with 8x4 instead of the 4x4 that the 6121 has? Not all that much price difference. I think you should stay away from the combo modem/router, seen too many problems with them. Netgear routers are fine, I have the R6200 and it works great, although Netgear has had some issues with IPV6. |

Re: [Equip] Need Advice - Modem w/WiFi or Separate Router?Always get a separate router.
I'm going to buy a new router. I'm deciding between ASUS or Netgear. The Apple is on it's last legs.
I might go for the Netgear as it is a little more Mac friendly than ASUS.
Bottom line: Always separate modem and router. Gateways are junk. And buy your own modem. My favorite is the Moto 6141. |

Personally I recommend separating them even though it sometimes seems convenient having both a modem and router in one device. I remember seeing at least one Gateway (2Wire) failing.
Our current set up is kind of old but it still works. Arris TM722 (I think) eMTA and a trusty Linksys WRT54G. |

Netgear has a problem with IPV6 and Comcast. I switched from Netgear to ASUS and haven't looked back, but I'm on Windows on the PC. Three iPhones have no problems connecting via WiFi, even on the 5ghz band. said by IowaCowboy:Always get a separate router.

Re: [Equip] Need Advice - Modem w/WiFi or Separate Router? Thanks for the replies all. I grabbed the SB6141 but ended up with a Linksys EA6300 because BB did not have the Netgear. Has anyone used this router before? I still have a few days for the install and Micro Center may have the Netgear in stock so I could return the Linksys. |

Go get an ASUS. I have the RT-N66U, it is a beauty » www.tigerdirect.com/appl ··· 66u+asus» www.frys.com/product/696 ··· _RSLT_PGLooks like Frys has the better price, $130 vs $160 from Tiger |

The U Version has built-in USB ports for USB attached storage direct to the router. I don't think the "R" version has the USB ports, but if you don't need them, it doesn't matter |

I checked the specs & it has them:
Interface 2 x USB 2.0
Just note: The "R" versions were sold by Best Buy stores. That's the only difference. |

So do you think the ASUS RT-AC68U is worth the difference in cost. |

Worth is a grey area. If you are a tech junkie, justifying the cost is not a concern. Are the features & options what you want? When I go to get my next router, the RT-AC68U will be considered. |

Reply meant for IowaCowboy, sorry. FWIW, you would also need AC compatible wireless adapters on all of your clients / devices on your network to take full advantage of the standard. |

Picked up the R6200 and the SB6141. Is there anything on the install I need to now about? Bridge mode or anything else?
Thanks! |
|

That's the exact setup I have and you can't go wrong with it. As said before the IPV6 is a little weird right now on the R6200, but sure that will be taken care of with a firmware update. Don't have to worry about bridge mode... Get the modem provisioned and the router setup the way you want it and you should be good to go. |

Just a heads up that I had the install today and everything is working well. Speeds are around 28mb down and 5mb up on wifi. Connection has been solid also.
Thanks for the help everyone. |
