Re: [Speed Issues] Headend Maintenance for Gardendale, AL

said by mixdup:

It depends on how they have it configured. They can set in the config file that the lights stay the same color regardless of channel bonding status. The "truth" is when you check the status page. If it has 8 channels active, then you're in good shape.

This is correct. In the Charter world, the orange light often times means that it is NOT bonded. This light can be flip flopped so the best way to check would be the status page.

Yuuan,

Any news on when the Atlanta, GA area will be upgraded? Specifically the suburb of Smyrna, GA?

Thanks.

Just got in from swapping modem. They gave me a Motorola SB6121 and I'm only seeing 4ch down. Not happy.

How can I check to see if my cable modem is set for 8? I have one of the Motorola modems from Charter. If I need to switch, I can go to the Vest office.

The 6121 is only a 4 channel modem. You need an 8 channel modem like the SB 6142 or the Cisco modems

Both the DPC3010 and the DPC3008 (Cisco) are 8 channel.

I had an old DOCSIS 2.0 Motorola modem for 10 years and it was rock solid. Dunno about the current models. I have an Arris E-MTA now.

Whatever you do, though, don't let them give you one of those Ubee modems

Ubee is what I just took back. That thing is a turd.

I had an old SB for years as well. You couldn't kill that thing.

Thanks.

Looks like I have the 4ch modem too. I'm in Hoover. Will Charter give me the SB6142 if I ask for it for of charge?

How should I phrase my request? "Give me a modem with 8 channel bonding?"

That should work.. ha.
I have a modem that supports 8 channel, but only 4 bonded so far.
I wish we could get some clarification what areas are 8 channel.

My understanding is Hoover could be overnight. Gardendale was scheduled for 1/20 and Hoover 1/21.

I knew something was up when internet was down at 4:30 am

Well. When I said that today I was met with "We only do that for bushiness customers". She said service tech would have to be scheduled for 8 ch. O_O Let me get back to you after tomorrow.

Great.. thanks for the info. I was wondering about the upgrade last night since my modem has been online 30+ days. I didn't think anything had happened but rebooted anyway.

Service tech? WTH? Probably be an extra $100 for 8 channel.

That's a load of bull. The modems are all the same. I have an 8 channel modem, it's an E-MTA, but still.

As a side note: Though I'm only 4 channel I'm seeing good speeds right now. And until tonight I would be around 2mb down by 5:00 pm.

I'll keep checking throughout the night (peak hrs).

Currently, I'm getting Download Speed: 5.26 Mbps (0.66 MB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3.93 Mbps (0.49 MB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 47 ms

Way below the 30mb I'm paying for each month.

Let me ask you guys a question. are you plugging directly into your cable modem to test or are you running test over wifi? Both? I'm still only seeing between 5mb to 12mb speeds.

My house is wired. I'm testing through a router (wired).

I didn't get a chance to swap my SB6121. So still 4ch.

Speeds as of 6:44pm

50+

Wifi will be slower depending on environment.

Went to swap my Ubee 4 channel for a Moto or Cisco 8 channel and they had no idea what I was talking about. They were frigging clueless.
Said all I needed was a D.3 modem.
I'm in the Montevallo area. That is 8 channel isn't?
This was at the Vestavia store.
I left with my original modem and a new remote control.

Yeah, Montevallo is 8 channel.

Just ask for a Cisco DPC 3008, Cisco DPC 3010, or Motorola Surfboard 6141. Don't mention anything about 8 channels or whatnot. Those are all three 8 channel modems. Just watch out, the Motorola Surfboard 6121 is a 4-channel modem.

Thanks for the info.
I'll try again next week.
I did ask for a Cisco or Motorola and they couldn't find any or didn't want to go through the trouble.
