They can stay home and watch Snow Day (which ironically had several scenes filmed here, even though I don't think there have been more than 2 snow days here in the 25 years that I've lived here ... not that there hasn't been snow and cold ... just that people here are nuts ... and go about as if everything's just normal.)
Anyway, it's great that there are people like you, mattmag to try to make sure that everybody's alright!!!
It's mild here at the moment, but I just drove home in freezing rain like I've never experienced before -- the drops were so big they spread to the size of nickels when they hit the windshield. It's coming down pretty hard so roads became slippery very quickly and people are panicking and hitting the brakes at the first hint of a slip....exactly what they shouldn't do, but common sense isn't exactly common these days.
When it slips back down to -24 in the next 36 hours, it's going to be interesting.
I don't know where you live, so I just make stuff up. Everyone with snowy cold might set up their summer fans outdoors to blow up and over Canada to Alaska. Alaskans won't even notice 20 or 30 more feet of snow, right?
Just about to head home, happy to report no stranded folks or other serious issues up until this point in the day. Hoping that it continues through tonight...
Temp is 26 degrees right now, and headed down into the very upper teens tonight.
ENOUGH all ready, keep this frigid weather up north where it belongs!!! With 28 degrees this morning in Florida one could turn into a block of ice!!!................................

on edit: the big clue that this is completely fictional is that Canada does not have Girl Scouts. We have Girl Guides.
If you are in one of the really cold areas, take the opportunity to try out the old throw-boiling-water-in-the-air trick. It'll help you forget how cold it is......momentarily.
Different! Not so much ice after all but we had what the weather guy called "surprise snow". 3" of it which closed down some of the highways for a while. The -20F windchill is something else also.
You and me both! Problem is between the cold and the snow and the new way they treat the road surface for ice/snow....the snow quickly turned or was packed into ice in parts of the state after traffic ran on it a while. And it seems nobody uses sand on the roads here now so it took a while to get sorted out. They usually do a pre treatment on the highways now and with the snow being a so called "surprise" that never got done.
Woa, last couple days been cold, Canadian cold from what I understand. Around zero or less even (F) with the wind chill being something below human. I've been out walking around in it and now I think I have just barely begun to imagine how it is for Minnesotta and Canada. Been a lot of water main breaks here in CT, one near UConn today I think.
It hurts to type now because of what the cold has done to my skin, lotion doesn't seem to help (the work I do is hard on the hands).
Even so, winter is kinda nice after the heat I endured down south. My Alain yearns for the cold (the constant, unending high summer heat 365 days a year is wearing her thin).
At least my neighbors don't keep the thermostat too low usually (no thermostat in my apartment, and I've got permission to open windows).
Yup, harsh, and yet, kinda nice. Just wish I had some wool socks and thermal pants. Maybe next year.
I recall a couple years ago when climate change was getting a lot of debate with hot emotions the egghead types studying what would likely happen said that one effect would be greater changes in normal limits and more violent weather.
The good wife was very upset, and with a worried look on her face she said, "I don't know what to do.
Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snow plows can get through?"
Then, with all the love and understanding in his voice that men who are married to blondes (and those with gray hair) always exhibit, the husband replied,
"Why don't you just leave the car in the garage this time?"
Here we go yet again! 8-12" expected along with 40mph winds and sub zero wind chills! Worst part about this is the dogs. They prefer sleeping on the couch to going outside and doing their business when its stormy. And there aint room on the couch for all 3 of us!
