Everything the XBOX One doesnt do - and there is a lot.For something that is supposed to be an entertainment console, it doesn't do much. It is much less "usable" than the 360.
The home page is horrible and clumsy, nothing it laid out intuitively.
No HBO Go app. (or any other useful apps really) The 360 did.
No streaming your FROM the console, there is no user interface at all. You cant sit down at the console and browse your music/movies/photos and play them. The 360 did.
No USB storage compatibility. Even if you wanted to put music and movies on an USB drive and play them you cant, the One won't recognize the USB storage. The 360 did.
No more voice messages (Trying to force you to use Skype?) I mean really? Who wants to use your controller to type a message with? The 360 did.
You cant voice or party chat w/ the 360 users, you cant do anything with 360 users for the most part.
No battery level indicator for the controller. The 360 did.
You cant use your headset from the 360 as the One has a new proprietary audio port.
You have to have your XBOX powered on to use the HDMI pass through for TV, this is stupid.
Voice commands are silly gimmicks, is easier and faster to use buttons.
In short I feel like I have been duped buying this thing. I'm actually thinking about boxing it up and returning it. This console is NOT ready for launch, it sucks.
Feel free to add what you notice this POS doesn't do. |

The HDMI pass through causes noticeable audio synch issues.
The HDMI pass through re-encodes audio to a lossy format.
It is difficult if not impossible to manage what is installed on the hard drive.
Finding games and/or DLC in the marketplace is not intuitive at all.
Actually, the entire menu structure is not intuitive at all.
The Blu-ray player is really sub-par in features and seems to also cause audio synch issues.
No DLNA audio streaming while playing games (something I love to do while playing Forza).
No Flash for the web browser. |

Hey now, they had to rush these suckers out in time to make the holiday buying rush. Most of the gimped features are simply perks that the competition can utilize, so they restricted things until they have time to build in their own versions that they can monetize properly. |

I'm liking my Xbox One and the layout and especially the voice interface (I rarely use a controller). As for interfacing with the 360 peasants, glad to keep the riffraff away ( I gave my old 360 to my Son) I never used a keyboard as sending text with a game console just seemed wrong, and now with Skype with auto tracking and zoom etc, it was one of the reasons I bought my Xbox One as its great for Skyping with the grand kids. As far as the software goes, I'd expect a seven year old 360 to have more software than the recently released Xbox One, so I'll give it some time to flesh out. And given I control my TV via my Xbox One, of course it would be on. Blake |

Microsoft have dropped the ball, it happens, look at the Sega Saturn / Dreamcast.
The Xbox and the Xbox 360 were both awesome consoles and held there own against the PS2/PS3 with the 360 probably being slightly better than the PS3. Quite simply the Xbox One was not ready to be released, which is staggering seeing how much time and resources Microsoft have had. They obviously released it to compete with the PS4, piggybacking off the success of the 360 in order to take sales from Sony but the result is the publics perception of Microsoft has been tainted. |

I bought the X1 and the PS4 at launch and the X1 is so much more ambitious than the PS4 that all of the shortcomings make it look worse than the PS4. In my opinion the X1 does everything that the PS4 does... except for Twitch streaming. I have no doubt that over time they will get some of the X1 issues ironed out, but its really not a good product at the moment. I would have loved to see how it would have worked had they not doubled back on all of those changes.
The main issues that I have with the X1 is that the voice recognition with the Kinect actually works about 50% of the time and I really dislike the interface. I was able to get around some of the interface issues by pinning what I wanted to the start page.
Somehow, the install while playing feature is a lot better and quicker on the PS4. I don't know how, but BF4 on both installed a lot quicker on the PS4. I think the X1 took about twice as long as the PS4 to be fully installed. Dead Rising was similar.
Neither notifies you when friends come on. This is something that I would love to see them get corrected really quickly. They both have positive and negatives, but I wouldn't feel good about recommending the X1 at the moment. |

Incidentally, I did find a "workaround" to the lack of DLNA audio streaming while gaming, but it's so kludgy that in practice I won't use it. However, in case anyone else is interested: » www.pocket-lint.com/news ··· ing-dlnaIn effect, you can use a free third-party Android or iOS app called Skifta as the intermediary between your DLNA server and the Xbox One. The reasons I found it kludgy are that there is no independent volume control for the music you're streaming; there is no easy UI on the Xbox One to control the music (i.e. advance to the next track) as there used to be; you have to use the Xbox Music app to receive the stream which sucks; and it chomps the battery on my phone. If I am wrong on any of the above points (either due to my own ignorance or due to improvements in either Skifta or the XB1's OS) I will be happy to be proven so. |

You sound like the sort of guy who would shun a smartphone, as you bought a phone for making phone calls. If that's seriously all you want it for, and you are happy then all is good, however the vast majority of people expect more than just being able to game on a console these days. I'll admit a lot of the issues are simple quality of life changes, but if it's predecessor had these features, then you'd expect the latest model to have them too (or a more eloquent way of doing it). |

I have come to love the Kinect, especially with netflix. "Xbox On" "Xbox Go To Netflix" "Xbox Play" "whichever show/video you want"
I especially love being able to play from a pause right as I enter the room(bathroom break, snacky snacks, etc). Instead of sitting down, picking up the controller, turning it on, and then hitting play, a simple "Xbox Play" as I close my door starts it up, which is awesome.
The issue I've found is that it is VERY VERY VERY particular with what you say. It also needs to be almost screamed at for it to hear you, but this could also be a way to force people to actually be particular in their commands...idk lol.
They shouldve included a list of all of the commands in the box. I feel this would've fixed a lot of user input issues with it.
On the other items: --Partying up is rough and needs to be ironed out fast. --Also had a buddy who was having issues getting a guest signed in the party up and play ghosts and after 30 mins of rebooting and trial and error they ended up just switching between games...which ended up being only a few due to time constraints even further constrained by the party issues. --I'm very frustrated with this whole need to install before playing and haven't completely accepted it. I've actually put off buying Forza 5 because I don't want to have to sit there for the 10+ hours I've heard it takes to install and update....What happens when there is a new release for a crazy hyped game such as Titanfall or the next Halo? No longer will you be able to get the game on a midnight release with friends, go home and pop the disc in and play....This really frustrates me. --The fact I have to go to the dashboard first to see my friends list is annoying to say the least as well. And as others have said, where is the Recent Players list? --Controller takes some getting used to but I'm slowly getting there. Time will tell how well I've adjusted when the next competitive game I'm interested in comes out.
All that said, I do enjoy it, am sure the kinks will be worked out, and have ZERO urge to become a traitor and get the PS4 lol. Not a SONY fan at all.
....well that was entirely long-winded |

I bought Ryse yesterday and went to play it. I needed a 3GB update and then to install the game. I don't know how long it too for the full install, but it took about 45 minutes before I could even play the game. I got a message that said "ready to play" but when I went in it was still installing so I had to wait. |

Bought Ryse as well and installed it, for me it did not take 45 minutes before I could play. It depends on download speeds for updates, etc. I have yet to have a game that takes 45 minutes to install. So far I have Forza, Ryse, Assasin's Creed, Need for Speed, and Dead Rising. None for me have taken that long. Looking on Cnet today they have an update coming soon to address some features such as creating a party.
Overall I am happy with my One. I tried the TV feature, didn't see any benefit from it. The new Kinect is nice, but I don't use too many voice commands. I play games, I use Skype (I have had everyone on the other end love the tracking feature BTW), I watch Bluray movies. I also know the thing has been out for about 2 months so there will be updates and improvements. As for the HDMI pass through issues most of the previews I saw mentioned there would be a delay if you use pass through so I just don't. As for not being able to party up/play with 360 users, that was known ahead of time as well. So I chuckle at the people such as the OP that complain about it. It all comes down to doing your homework ahead of time. |

The issue with installing games from the optical drive to the HDD has been around since the PS3 was launched. It is still the best way to get gobs of data to the console most efficiently and at an affordable price. It is not a perfect solution, and it can be annoying at times, but it will be wonderful not having to switch discs like we did on the 360 with Mass Effect 2 and 3. |

I bought Forza 5 and installed it on launch day. The update was an admittedly-astonishing 6 GB, but I have a 30 Mbps connection and it seemed to use the majority of it. It couldn't have taken more than 10-15 minutes to install and update. Frankly, it took longer to install and update The Last of Us on my PS3. That remains the longest I've ever had to wait for a game from disc insertion to actual playtime: about 30 minutes. Though I confess a PS3 System Update was required as part of that process. |

I was pretty sure I read that somewhere. Not going to take the time to go find it so I'll just admit I can be wrong as I could and probably am remembering it differently.
However, my personal experience with some games is much different.
I had a 3/1 internet(yay verizon). On this, if I have the internet all set up, pop the disc(s) in, and hit install, the combined time of install and apparent update was astronomical. I have Ryse, BF4, COD. Unfortunately the culprit is that it updates first so the download would happen and then the disc install. As such, it would be upwards of 5-6 hours of some games before I could even go into them to "play". I put play in quotes because as I could go into the game, I could do nothing more than look and listen at the home screen before it installed. Most of the time, I just went and did something else so I can't say the exact time-length.
Straight disc-install times should not differ from console to console. So it's funny hearing people say how it takes 15 minutes or so to install. I have since switched ISPs and have a faster internet, but when I picked up DR3, I installed it while not connected. So the install went first. This took a LOT longer than only 15 minutes, that I can guarantee. |

The retail version of Fallout 3 for the PC is a stupidly slow install from disk. |

My speeds average around 20/2 with TWC. I agree that the bulk of the 45 minutes was probably downloading the 3GB update as I do not purchase digital if possible. When I went in to play I was surprised that we it was "ready to play" that I couldn't actually play but could only watch a install bar. I ended up just playing Peggle 2 instead. The update was nothing too bad compared to when I went in to download the 4.5GB China Rising BF4 expansion for PS4. That took at least 4 hours on public release day. |
