I already have trouble reading some stuff at 1920 x 1080 on a 23-inch screen. Small fonts will be ridiculous at 3840 x 2160.

There is a cheaper monitor. But HDMI 30Hz. for Half the price, and 39inch:

It is also Ultra HD. Again, only down side is 30hz HDMI.

Presumably there will be a number of these 28" 4K 3840x2160 monitors trickling in at, around or near ~$1000 USD.

Philips announced one recently:
quote:
Philips Also Debuts 28-inch 4K Ultra HD Monitor

The Philips UltraClear Display debuts today, combining 4K UHD high resolution with a color depth of 1.07 billion colors to deliver brilliant performance, screen clarity and detail with four times the resolution of Full HD. Whether you require extremely detailed information for CAD-CAM solutions, use 3D graphic applications or are a financial wizard working on huge spreadsheets, this Philips display will provide UltraClear 3840×2160 pixel images to meet the visual demands of the most sophisticated power user. The 28-inch monitor (model 288P6) is also ideal for those seeking superb onscreen clarity and color accuracy for personal applications, and includes built-in stereo speakers for multimedia and MHL technology for easy mobile device connectivity.

Affordability is a relative term here though. ~$1000 is an improvement for the most part but it's far removed from an economical choice for most.

The Dell model might be really attractive if they shave a little more off the price during one of those deals that are known to come around.

Edit:

For what its worth, I mentioned the Dell P2815Q (28" 3840x2160) - under ~$1000 here a while ago:

Well, it's dirt cheap compared to:

Set the display to 200% or 300%.

Set the display to 200% or 300%.

Then you just spend all day scrolling the screen back and forth.

Which is why I used the word "relative",........

Personally I'm mostly OK with spending ~$1000 for the Dell P2815Q so I could bite as soon as it is released. However, I would feel better about it if I waited for a sale and got ~$100, ~$150 or ~$200 off the retail price.

Still there are plenty of people that wouldn't or couldn't buy at those prices and I can kind of relate to that too.

I have a feeling that at that price there may be a while before you see a sale on it. Since there is no spec yet, it's hard to compare, but I kinda mystified that the 24" display goes for $300 extra.

Announced about a month ago, Dell's first 28-inch monitor with a 4K resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) has now been confirmed to arrive in stores in two weeks' time (on January 23rd), priced at $699. Known as P2815Q, this Ultra HD display is said to feature an IPS LED-backlit panel and a stand allowing pivot and height adjustment.

Dell hasn't shared much in terms of specs but if it's similar to the company's other 4K offerings, the P2815Q should have an 8 ms response time, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and HDMI and DisplayPort (maybe even mini DisplayPort) connectivity.

Agreed. I love my HP LP2475w, but that may make me upgrade a bit early...

Wow!! Where's the catch? It makes absolutely no sense to sell a UHD 28" monitor for almost half of the 24" UHD monitor... unless there is something special about that 24" model, something like a full array backlight, quantum dot LED backlight, IGZO panel, etc. For what it worth, I paid more for a 27" 1920x1200 2709W, and much more for a U3011...

I'm still a bit skeptical but:
quote:
(Update: And the catch is known: The monitor has a refresh rate of just 30Hz at full 4K resolution, which isn't good if you're into gaming. The refresh rate jumps to 60Hz if you downgrade the monitor to 1080p resolution, but why would you buy a 4K display to use it at 1080p?)

»www.pcworld.com/article/ ··· esk.html

A 30Hz limit at 4K isn't the end of the world but it's not the type of thing I would personally expect from a 4K monitor in early 2014.

Brings a couple of my favorite quotes to mind:

There is hardly anything in this world that someone cannot make a little worse...and sell a little cheaper. And the people who consider price alone are this persons lawful prey.

The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Well said indeed,......

I'm willing to spend a bit more (~$1000 USD or maybe more) or just wait for prices to come down a bit more on a 4K monitor with better specs.

That's strike two, and probably not the last thing they decided to go cheap on.

In this case, I think one might be better of with the Seiki 39" TV, if there's space for it. »9to5mac.com/2013/12/16/r ··· el-iris/

For what its worth I bought a Seiki 39" 4K SE39UY04 UHDTV for ~$489 (or something like that) off of Amazon not too long ago. Its was OK but I don't necessarily think it would be better then the upcoming Dell 28",.....just a bit cheaper and bigger. but we will see,....

I don't automatically write off TN displays but it wouldn't be my first choice either,....

30hz TN panel.

No thanks. That's a downgrade from an IPS panel, even at a lower resolution.
