Re: [Networking] Actiontec MI424WR Rev I rebooting

Yes, you cannot have the Linksys acting like a DHCP server - that means you have 2 DHCP servers on your local network, and I'll guarantee you that's why the Actiontec is rebooting....

If you want to leave the Linksys connected, you must set it as a bridge - which means you need to disable its DHCP server. You can still assign it a different IP so it won't conflict with the Actiontec, or set it to a static IP within the same IP scope as the Actiontec - ex. 192.168.1.50.

What address range to you have for the Linksys for its DHCP? it has to be a subnet other than the Actiontech. If its the default, then you have two routers handing out IP's in the same range and that will cause major problems

We have not gotten the 1.9.5 update yet and when the router has been rebooting the STBs have not been rebooting.

Why do you think the router is rebooting? In the "System Monitoring", how many minutes do you see in the "Active Status"?

Because I noticed my connection had stopped and when I looked at the router all the lights were off then coming back on the same as when you do a power off and on.
When I checked the router status the time active matched the hours since the LAN Coax Link Rate was checked.

I just changed the Linksys from DHCP to a Static IP of 192.168.1.50.

The Linksys Local IP Address is set to 192.168.2.1. The starting address for other devices is 192.168.2.2.

Two laptops are connected to the Linksys via ethernet cables.
Here's Linksys setup screen if it helps,

Okay it looks like there's nothing special connected to the Linksys nycdave See Profile recommended to put your Linksys as a bridge(switch). Looking at your setup, it appears it's still not setup as one. In an AP/switch mode your Linksys WAN does not go into play, there will be no WAN(internet setup). You want to go to the "Network Setup" and assign the static 192.168.1.50, disable DHCP server there. Remove the Ethernet cable from the WAN port of the Linksys and connect it to the Linksys LAN instead. The other end of the Ethernet cable to the Actiontec LAN port. At this point your Linksys is just a switch.

Ok I went into the Linksys Advanced Routing menu.
"Operating Mode: If the router is hosting your Internet connection, select Gateway mode. If another router exists on your network, select Router mode."
I selected Router mode, saved the settings then plugged the cable coming from the FiOS router into port 1 of the Linksys.
Now the devices on the Linksys have a gateway of 192.168.1.1 and the IP numbers of 192.168.1.6 and 192.168.1.7.

I'm not familiar with Linksys's terminology but based on the ip's, they are in the Actiontec's subnet which is what you want. If the laptops are working then that option is the correct mode to bridge the Linksys.

Thanks. Yes the computers on the Linksys are connected.
I'll keep a check on the router Active Status.

What type of routers, computers, DVRs etc do you have connected to your network and what type of connection are they using? (eg Ethernet, WiFi, MoCA)

I've got 3 computers and a printer connected via Ethernet. 1 DVR and 4 STBs via Coax. 3 other devices using WiFi.
The main router is the Actiontec MI424WR Rev I.
Second is a Linksys WRT54GS, Wireless-G Broadband Router now set to run as a switch.

So far the router has been active for 20 hours. If it coes for two days without rebooting then it was the Linksys in DHCP mode that was causing the problem.

Click for full size
You might have a device that is overwhelming the Actiontec's NAT table. Start by eliminating each devices at a time to find out the culprit. Have you scan with AV/AM on all your pc's? Is there any pc used for playing games? Check your UPnP settings, is it enabled? If enabled is it set to cleanup old unused services? The UPnP settings in Rev. I is hidden. To check, logon to the Actiontec then click »192.168.1.1/index.cgi?ac ··· page=900
You can also disable UPnP(this will cause some programs not to work if ports are not forwarded manually) for awhile to see if it's the one causing the reboot. This way, it's easier to find the culprit if there is one or two.

My actiontec is turned off so I can't verify on mine, however I believe these routers can send logging data to a syslog server. It might be advantageous to send the logs to a server as there might be something of value logged before the crash occurs.

There are plenty of Windows syslog server applications available that are free or come with a short trial license, unix/linux includes it in the OS. I think that is your next step.

Wow, people with the same problem! I've had this problem since day one of getting FiOS, and have been troubleshooting it for almost an entire year. The problem is totally random and sometimes goes away for days/weeks at a time...and then suddenly in a single day, the router will reboot three more times. Verizon doesn't seem to be able to do anything about it; I've replaced the router about four times.

I will say, that one thing that may have helped a little bit is putting the router into legacy mode for its WiFi. Since doing that, the router has only rebooted about once in a month or so. Then again, that may be entirely by coincidence.

You guys might be onto something about STB reboots being part of the problem. Around 1:50am all the STB rebooted for the IMG update and that caused the router to reboot.

Those logs would be normal when the STB reboots, in your case the STB rebooted because of the IMG upgrade. You can try to reboot your STB manually and you will see those LAN coax link down/up. That's the reason I ask you before if you see a WAN log. When a WAN log shows with the LAN log, the router has rebooted. Without the WAN log, an STB or more has rebooted but not the router. The "Active Status" is the more reliable place to check if the router had rebooted.

Mine is rebooting randomly as well. It's on the latest firmware version. I only use FiOS for internet/phone (though the router doesn't handle the phone, obviously).

I've telnet'ed into the box in an attempt to locate some sort of boot cause event log, but have thus far been unsuccessful.

I received a call from "tier 3" tech at Verizon informing me that this is now a known issue between the Cisco STB's and Verizon Network and they are working on a patch for it. Problem with that is, some others experiencing the exact same issue have Motorola STB's and not Cisco. I have a strong feeling they will find it to be a larger problem with Verizon's network and Actiontec Rev i routers.

I may have "fixed" the problem icemanny. Since reconnecting my old Rev. F router and taking the Rev. I router off the network completely, I haven't had a single reboot going on almost 43 hours now. Previously, the Rev. I had rebooted every day since November. I'll let you know if this keeps up.

I'm 100% sure it's a router issue as I had no problems with the old Rev F router.

Once again at almost the same time as yesterday the router rebooted again,

The question is can the firmware be automatically be updated as the STB IMG can be or do we have to go into the router menu to DL and run the update?

I don't know if a firmware patch will fix these problem. There are many Rev. I users like me that doesn't have the rebooting problem. The only thing that will make a difference is, if there are bad batches of these routers that have different hardware inside. Maybe Verizon should backtract and collect the MAC's of the problematic rev I routers and see if they all came from the same batches to figure it out.
