[Modem/Router] Rogers newest modem. As discussed in other thread, I've been having a bit of back and forth with Rogers, anyway, Steve called, and got me $45/month internet for 8 years, includes modem. He wants me to upgrade to their newest modem; my question - how easy is it to go into the modems settings to change the DNS? I used unblockus, which is easy to change on the current Cisco modem that I am using. Just wondering if any here have experience. I'm allowed to keep the current modem if I want, he's simply suggesting the new one is better. |

Which modem was it? Was it the HiTron or something completely different? |

In the short Term, I'd avoid the CGN3. It's potential is great, but until Rogers gets on top of all the problems with it your Cisco is going to be reliable. The Hitron will not. |

In short, do not get the CGN3 unless you are signing up for the 250/20 plan. Otherwise stick with the DPC3825 and put it bridge mode and buy a decent router. |

What Wi-Fi router is considered "decent" currently with the best price / performance ratio, and possibility to replace FW easily with DD-WRT? Any comparison links & router analytics on the web? |

I'll have to figure out which exact modem it was, but I though he said it was the one for $12/month. When I asked about DNS change, he said I'd likely have to call it in. Right now, the modem is set to regular mode, but you can get in there and change the DNS, so all access points in the house (3 of them) don't have to have special settings.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? |

It is about $140 is dual band and you can use dd-wrt, Merlin or other firmware, although the stock Asus firmware looks pretty good. |

Few things...
1. The CGN3 modem that Rogers is selling has a lot of known issues if you're putting it in bridge mode. People have better luck using it as a router but, well, if that's you're thing...
2. Unblock-Us at a router level is probably not the best idea and it will create performance issues for you. Because of the way GeoDNS works, using the Unblock-Us DNS causes bad routing for you as you get connected to CDN servers appropriate for the Unblock-Us DNS rather than your machine.
Case in point, just the other day I was debugging a problem with NHL GameCenter. GameCenter wanted to connect to a named Akamai CDN server to retrieve video data.
The Unblock-Us DNS service was resolving this CDN server to a machine 17 hops and 120ms of latency away. The end result was unwatchable HD footage.
The local DNS server for the ISP was resolving the same CDN server to 7 hops and 18ms of latency away. Perfect HD streaming. |
