Re: [Speed] Comcast 2014 Side Discussion about Doubling Speeds

Comcast has put out a press release about these latest speed upgrades now:

My latest bill didn't mention an upgrade, but after a power cycle this morning, it looks like the new speeds are in effect here in the Seattle area. Am a little disappointed that the increase only affects the downstream speeds.

Was on Blast 50/10, now 105/10 (with over-provisioning):

We got upgraded in SW Washington today. I was on Blast (50/10) and am now showing DL speeds in the mid 80s (UL is unchanged). I had a tech out here for a service call this morning and when he got things running again, he was a bit surprised at the speed and then said "oh yeah, this area's getting upgraded on the 16th, which I just realized is today." Don't know the extent of "this area," but we live out in the middle of nowhere (Hockinson/Brush Prairie) so I would expect much of the SW WA area to get upgraded very soon (if not already).

Should be everything out of Beaverton (Portland, Or ) so all of Washington and Oregon with a little ID and NV? thrown in.

You should have higher speeds than that. Are you running an older 100 meg router? Or an old DOCSIS 2 modem?

I wonder what happen to me. About 1:30 am I power cycled my modem and I was at 135/24 so I thought I had the speed upgrade. I have the Arris tm722g modem which is only a 4x4 channels. I took another speed test and back to the blast tier.
In August I called about the free upgrade but the cs said that he did did not know when we would get it. He said he could put me the 105/20 for free and no install charges. May be it was on the free upgrade to 105 I was not edible for the 150 download.
For the people that got this offer in August you might need the check your speeds again.
I am in the Puyallup, WA area.

Re: [Speed] Comcast 2014 Side Discussion about Doubling Speeds

Good questions. I'm not sure what modem I have (I'm at work now and cannot check). My service was installed in August 2013. I don't know if Comcast was still handing out DOCSIS 2 modems back then. I also have triple play, so the modem is one with telephone support if that helps identify the possible models. I don't have any routers on my home network. However, I do have some switches. I'll have to make sure that they are not a limiting factor.

I imagine the 4x4 modem is the cause - Check the thread below as the OP appears to have the same problem as you.

»[Speed] Free Upgrade from 105 to 150 brickwalling at 135mbps down.

I have an 8x4 so i'll check this evening when I get home if I've been upgraded from 105.

I'm not sure it's the cause because if I'm reading the post correctly, he tested at 135/24 which is above Blast speed, and then tested again and was at blast speed which woulda been 105/24.

Bump to 150Mb went into effect here overnight, however the max I'm getting is about 135Mb/s due to my 4x4 modem. I guess it can't get close to the max theoretical speeds for 4 channels?

Going to go swap it out for a 8x4 modem later this afternoon.

I've got a 4x4 here too and the max I get is about 135Mb/s on the 150Mb/s tier. So looks like a 8x4 is definitely necessary.

I think Aug was the month I got the 1 year free for the 105/20. I was actually getting 124/24.
After re-booting my modem this AM I did get the upgrade to the 150, actually getting 177 down now.
I have a 6183 modem which is 16 channels down so wonder if that 4x4 modem has something to do with why your not getting the 150 down.

Absolutely so. Anyone who has a 4x4 unit and Extreme 150 will top out at 135 or less. 8x4 or better is needed to get the full speed.

Can also confirm. I'm on the free Extreme 105 (now 150) for a year since September, and my 4x4 modem maxed out at ~135Mb/s. Just swapped it for a 8x4 and now I'm getting 175+.

Your reply supports my belief that after the current upgrade hits all, everyone should have 8x4 minimum with 16x4-24x8 units being ideal.

Enjoy that speed.

The problem that I am having is why at 1:30 this mourning after a reboot of the modem I was getting 135/23 speeds. At 10:30 i was back to 117/24. I been taking speed test since I got back home around 2:00 pm. The test all are in the 117/24 range.
The Arris TM722g pdf reads 160 for down loads. I realize that I will get the 150 but I should get what it is maxed out at.
spike010101 said his 4x4 modem maxed out at 135Mb/s. It should be what I am getting but only getting 117Mb/s which I got before the upgrade today.
I bought a Arris SB6183 today so I'll install that when I get a chance.

Are you connecting on wireless? if so you should try a wired connection, I had the same results via wireless but once I connected wired I got the max bandwidth.

OK, something weird is going on. Earlier this afternoon I rebooted and got about a 100 Mbps download on speedtest.net here in Portland (North), but just now I'm getting less than I was before per speedtest.net: 44.42 Mbps!? I'm on Blast and before I was getting pretty consistent 57/58 Mbps through a wired connection to the computer.

And ShaperProbe tells me this:

DiffProbe release. January 2012. Build 1008.
Shaper Detection Module.

Connected to server 4.71.251.149.

Estimating capacity:
Upstream: 12353 Kbps.
Downstream: 23931 Kbps.

The measurement will take upto 2.5 minutes. Please wait.

Checking for traffic shapers:

Upstream: No shaper detected.
Median received rate: 12133 Kbps.

Downstream: No shaper detected.
Median received rate: 23445 Kbps.
