How much of the furor is over the mere suggestion that a Mac could get owned? We know how many people don't use any type of security on their computers, or who never update the programs they have, or who take no security precautions on their cell phones. How are they any different from a honeypot? Those people are going to be like lambs to the slaughter. That was the point that I got from that NBC piece - how easily it's going to be for any hacker to access the computers and phones of people who don't take basic security precautions when bringing their computers and phones into areas where they should know that their devices will be targeted, and who bring in computers full of private information that could be compromised. |

I liked how the reporter said they where using "special tools" and then showed the guy using Ubuntu to sniff the traffic. Real L34T dude.
I also though this story sounded like a bunch of bunk. If simply turning on a computing device at a local shop was all it took then you would bet domestic criminals would be doing that here too. |

" First, all the attacks required some kind of user interaction. Whether to execute applications or to open a Microsoft Word document, all the attacks shown required user interaction in order to compromise the device." The matter has gone from being somewhat amusing to an outright, purposeful lie, IMO. Blaming the 'editing' process for the FUD just shows a continued lack of irresponsibility. Hype the need for a product (Trendmicro) - screw the facts ( & anyone buying into the FUD) |

This, of Kyle's comments, is especially revealing: quote: ...the infections occurred on newly unboxed hardware. Had basic security precautions such as updating the operating system or not opening emails from unrecognized sources been done, these attacks could have been prevented.
What kind of goofy "show and tell" is NBC running???! |

What kind of goofy "show and tell" is NBC running???! Let's look at that. IMO, it wasn't an email from an unknown source. He sent the email to himself full well knowing there was a payload. Then not just 'opening' it, but then having the gall to execute the payload, then claiming the dangers of opening emails from unknown sources. A piece of "work", if you get the drift. |

theVerge has a good article that touches on this... » www.theverge.com/2014/2/ ··· -hackersquote: Why is the myth of the virus-laden Olympics so hard to dismiss?
On some level, it's because the myth isn't all myth. Russia really is a net malware exporter, and any time a private company attempts a botnet census, the country is usually first by a mile. They make most of the fraud-based software on the web, and host most of it too. Network-based fraud is still a lucrative business, and as arrest after arrest shows, it's one the Russian crime syndicates have adopted as their own.

Which makes it even more puzzling why NBC fabricated the events rather than just let the nature of the beast do it's dirty work. |

Perhaps to embarrass Russia over a number of other socio-political issues, one in particular, upon which Russia and NBC disagree...? Networks have multiple ways of trying to make life miserable for folks who have fallen from their favor. |
