West NC Needs Upgrades!

Looks like some of us over in the Western NC need some upgrades Frontier. My current 6Mbps service runs around 1.5-2Mbps during the evening hours.

Welcome to Frontier's "High-speed" Internet! I'm in SE Ohio and have 12mbps bonded service. I only get 1-3mbps from ~7PM-11PM every evening, which means each of my 6mbps lines are only getting 0.5-1.5mbps.

My pings are typically 80ms in the evenings but I get a nice 1.5-3% packet loss that makes up for it. It's ludicrous really because my only choices are Frontier and satellite. I've seriously been considering dropping my DSL altogether and using 4G access on my phone for internet.

Your problem appears to be your entry point, the next hop. I would check with your local office maybe they can move you to a different port.

Yes,
Looks like we have some problems with some aggregation points. I'm not sure if its the actual DSLAM backhaul's or a multiplex point as everyone in our region is routed into Sylva. From there it leaves on a 1GigE link to Raleigh where it aggregates into a 10GigE link.

ge--6-3-0---0.arr01.drhm.nc.frontiernet.net [50.52.128.73] (1GigE)
xe--3-2-0---0.cor02.atln.ga.frontiernet.net [74.40.1.73] (10GigE)

Looks like our 1Gig ports are on the same router just different interfaces, hence "ge-6-3-0 vs ge-6-3-1". If that is the case it would indicate that Frontier has multiple 1GigE links out of Sylva as well as the /30 subnets are back to back subnets " .72/30 .76/30" Which to me if the case is true, I would have port channeled the two 1GigE's and saved a subnet. Although they could be using some sort of route-map to traffic engineer, so to each his/her own. I just wish they would fix some of the last mile backhaul. My CO even has fiber running into to it, so I would think the lowest link out would be OC3 (155Mbps) although I have seen DS3 (45Mbps) over fiber. If connections stay like this too long I may have to break down and buy a reel of Fiber (@ $0.16/ft :/ ) and have my guys overlash some to my house, but I would be a waist since I'm not sure if I will be here 2 years down the road.

** Cable stops about 1500ft from my house, and since we run a fiber to feeder network running only 3 actives per node its too far to extended the cable and why buy coax for that distance when its twice the cost of fiber **

Mitchell county/Bakersville are just got upgraded. I had 3Mbps and had some issues as you, where my download speeds would drop to less than 1Mbps in the evenings. I would email AskFrontier@ftr.com and inquire about the slow speeds in the evening like I did back in April of last year. For whatever reason, whoever you talk to through email can get more info on upgrades (they also gave me 2 months of free service), and I even got a call from the regional manager. Their upgrade plans slipped by about 5 months, but it went through this Jan, and I was able to upgrade to 12/1 and I no longer suffer the slowdown in the evenings.

I have already called in. Of course the typical answer was your connected at full speed. Of course I'm connected at at full speed, my DSL modem and DSLAM sync just fine. I did get a hold of someone who actually looked into the issue and said that there was a congested aggregation point with no word on upgrades

Why I suggested you email them at the email I listed. You will not for the most part get anywhere with telephone support. Email is definitely the way to go from my experience. Over the 6 months or so I talked to Frontier about the issues I talked to the same person every single time. (This helps)

Email already on the way.

Image above shows why most people go with cable if it is an options and support / service isn't horrid. This is a cutout of a network map of a system I admin. Each node / router is linked via 10Gbps to make sure our Access / Core network has the backhaul for each city / town. *Note this snapshot was taken at 9pm EST for peak hour usage, and we have packages over 100Mbps

The equipment doesn't support it.
