Re: [DSL] Just subscribed to DSL Extreme

Ok! I got the DSL modem today. Installed it. Connect my D-link router. Reconfigured it to PPPoE with username and password. Now I am back on line. Speed is much faster and video playback is pretty smooth with occasional pauses.

I subscribed for 1500dl/384ul.

I went to speedtest.org and ran five tests, with a PPoE configured laptop connected directly into the DSL modem. Here are the results:

dl/ul in Mb/s
---------------
0.998/0.371
1.01/0.390
0.911/0.402
0.888/0.440
0.923/0.445

It is noticeably faster than my Pacbell DSL, but wondering if I could get closer to the optimal theoretical of 1500/384 or 1.5/.384 It looks like my upload speeds are pretty good.

I am running the speedtest again while composing this post. This time, I am using a computer that is going through my PPPoE configured D-link wireless router that is connected to the DSL modem. I got:

dl/ul in Mb/s
---------------
1.20/0.012
0.988/0.356
1.13/0.334

My question is whether or not these numbers are pretty good, oh and whether my speed will improve over the next few weeks.

I ran some line tests, and it looks like the line is running clean (no code violations or errors), but the physical sync rate is capping out at about 1000 rather than 1500. Unfortunately, that most likely means that the outside phone cable is too long to consistently get higher speeds. Before we assume that, however, I would suggest doing some further testing and troubleshooting; I'll have a tech give you a call to assist with such.

On an ATTIS (AT&T Internet Services circuit (it hasn't been "PacBell" in twelve years), they would set the profile at 1536d/384u; and, allowing for the ATM/PPPoE overhead, you would expect a speed test of ~1300d/325d.

Here is a screen shot from my 1536/384 days, when the service was SBC (successor to PacBell):

1536/384 line stats.

Note that the SN Margin is 12.0 dB, while the Attenuation is 46 dB. Those numbers are controlled, for the most part, by the condition and length of the copper. My numbers were on a 9,156 foot loop, and allowed a speed upgrade to 3008d/512u. You trade margin for speed; but at 3008/512, my margin was still a double digit 11.0 dB. You would like the margin to be at least 9.0 dB on an ADSL line for best results. There could still be line issues which need to be resolved, so keep working with the techs.

P.S. Those stats are where AT&T would set the profile; DSLX obviously has different profile settings.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough information yet to determine why your speed slowed down there then; I've been checking your line periodically throughout today and the readings have been largely consistent from what I saw earlier.

Do the speeds still seem slow now? When (as precisely as you can recall) did you notice the speed seemed to slow down?

One test that may prove useful is to try running a traceroute. Go to Start -> Run (or click in the search box) -> type CMD and hit Enter (alternately, you can go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt). Then type "tracert google.com" (or some other website, such as speedtest.net, speedtest.org, etc.). If you do this when the connection is working fine, and again when the connection is having trouble, and then send me the results, I can compare them and get a better idea of where and why the slowdown may be occurring.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the quick reply.

During and just after the switch over, it was running about 1.0 mbt/s d/l, then yesterday, it dropped down in speed pretty hard.

Takes a long time even to get to google.com. I ran the traceroute command and piped it into a text file.

c:\users\satow>tracert google.com > traceroute.txt

Here is a copy of the results:

Thanks Norman. Since I switched over to DSLExtreme would they be able to modify the line settings? I don't see any harm in trying to set the modem speed higher, until the margin drops down.

Unfortunately we can't really play with the line settings too much (at least, not on our traditional DSL offerings; we have much more control with Fusion), but it doesn't look like a line issue anyways, as we discussed. Definitely interested to see if the same consistently-high times remain with router bypassed.

dslx_nick See Profile says your profile has sync at 1000 instead of the 1500 expected. DSL is adaptive, and will train up, or down, based on exchange between the modem and the DSLAM. Trying to squeeze out more speed likely will cause instability. I don't see any Attenuation in your stats; but lower is better. My stats show 46 dB Attenuation at 9,156 feet. If your Attenuation is greater than 55 dB, you are probably at the limit for your loop length.

Here's another traceroute test after the new firmware install on my router. This time to youtube, which is now so slow I can't watch videos.
