MSE, Superantispyware 5.7.1018 & Winpatrol (Woof) I haven't kept up with the latest and greatest lately. These seem to do okay on my Win7 3 year old laptop. Great job on the poll kim |

I now use AVG. I used Norton Internet Security before, but when it refused to start under Windows 7, and Customer Service couldn't find a way to make it do its job, I switched. Mostly satisfied. |

This poll makes history. It is the very first where MSE/Windows Defender has taken first place. It looks like they (Avast and MSE) were tied last year. I seem to recall in the past being able to see the actual number of votes for each but I can't do that now on Fx).
Actually, I think they should have been separate choices because Windows Defender on Windows 8 is completely different from Windows Defender on earlier versions and also is not like MSE. So, the waters have been muddied by combining them. Of course, Microsoft did the first muddying because they should have changed the name for Windows Defender on Windows 8). I would NEVER use MSE on any version of Windows before Windows 8 (and before Windows 8 Windows Defender doesn't even qualify as an Antivirus application). I would love to see how many folks who have Windows 8 are using Windows Defender as their AV choice. I am doing that and happy with it but would never use it or MSE on any earlier version of Windows. |

Avast is finally starting to lose customers after the many problems with version 8 and the even buggier version 9. I had used Avast for 8 years before finally going back last month to MSE, which I had tried for a few months in 2012. I find the current MSE doesn't slow down my Win7 laptop like the older version, and I figure that alongside MBAM and a few other measures it's good enough for me. |

... 2011 Member Choice Anti-virus poll
The results in this year's poll showed a quite a shift from 2009.
The biggest change since 2009 was the release of Microsoft Security Essentials. Since it was released in September 2009 after the 2009 poll it has become the most popular anti-virus choice of DSLR users edging out our second place option, Avast Free Antivirus. ...

Re: 2014 AV PollI'm using an older version of Avast (8.0.1483) on two computers. On a third computer I'm using MSE and happy with it. |

MSE is completely different from Windows Defender which is designed for and available ONLY on Windows 8, 8.1. "Windows 8's integrated Defender is a full anti-malware solution that takes advantage of some additional security enhancements (as the Measured/Secure Boot and ELAM features) built-in to the OS, to enable it to start actively defending the system from a known good environment faster, reducing potential blind spots in their coverage. Windows Defender and Windows SmartScreen on Windows 8 is all you need to help you guard your PC against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software in real time. Just make sure the new PC came with no other third-party antivirus software pre-installed (even if you did not use or activate it)." » answers.microsoft.com/en ··· 2fae6c9fRead this excellent wiki about Windows Defender on Windows 8, 8.1: » answers.microsoft.com/en ··· 72fabb92 |
