Who knows, they are in the market to make as much money as they can and imposing caps is a great way to limit use and raise income.

I think at the Comcast/TWC merger hearings, stipulations might be made to hold off data caps, which did not bode well for customers, or work out well for TWC in the past. They need to do things right out of the box if this gets approved.

I heard that Comcast has not been enforcing it's current cap limit. I think a bigger question is if data caps are not approved for the merger, how long will that last?

I used to be on Comcrap and got hit with their "invisible" cap. The only solution was a business line which cost significantly more. My hope is either the merger is denied (unlikely) or Google saves me either from competition or running fiber to my house.

I actually like TWC for the most part, their speeds are currently not great, especially on the upload. 2 years ago when I had to restore some data that was lost, I maxed out my 50mb line for about 3 months and never heard anything from TWC.

My estimate is that in late 2015 or by mid 2016 Comcast will start enforcing a cap on purchased TWC subscribers.

It will take until fall of this year to finalize the deal, then they'll spend much of 2015 working on unifying the two companies and getting everything standardized. So maybe by 2016 everything will be all finished and Comcast will then turn their attention to enforcing their caps nationwide and wringin' that extra cash out of their subs.

Enjoy your cap-free connection while it lasts my friend. Personally, I've kicked my cloud backing up into high gear. With a 5 Mbps upload you can upload ~1.8 TB in a month, so if we've got about two years of cap-free Internet left @ 5 Mbps, you're looking at around 40 TB of personal data you can get backed up before the caps hit.

Any time I have ever tried to use upload like that, I got throttled down to nothing. What service did you use and how did you avoid killing your connection?

I have stuff I would like to back up, but at best I could only do 3GB a night. And in the day time download would go sub 1mbs if I used the upload like that.

You sure it's throttling, or just your upstream saturating out choking everything else with it? On both my DSL, and any Time Warner connection I've touched in my area I've been able to max both download and upload out with some QoS in play. You have to make sure you prioritize the correct traffic, and rate limit the upload so it doesn't shoot the latency up too far.

Doubtful they'll impose limits, but hopefully they will go to pay for what you use. To charge everyone the same price for different consumption is pure socialism.

The problem is you expect them to charge reasonable rates for those tiers and time and time again it has been proven they will gouge the customer where they can.

I pay $92 per month for 50/5 service, that is MORE than enough for far more than I consume. I guarantee you if they went to a pay for use model you would not be happy with the pricing.

How are you able to determine what their costs are? I've got 75/5 and use close to 200 GB a month and pay nearly the same as my mom who doesn't use 10 GB.

Yes but is your mom on 75/5? She's wasting money if she is. It's not the ISP's fault someone is paying for more then they need.

I use a lot of data and am on 30/5 and paying a LOT more per month then someone who's on 15/1.

Again, 200GB in 2014 is not same what it used to be in like 2011 as far as whats considered excessive usage.... Nowdays online services/apps are expanding, speeds increasing generally speaking filewise everything you use online getting bigger because tech is advancing and thus if isp had cap of 200gb in 2011 in 2014 that should be upped to at least 300....

She's on 30/5. I consider my 75/5 a bargain, but I'm not able to determine what a "reasonable" rate is for TWC. I can only determine what a rate that I can support as a consumer.

Which makes your comment about "pure socialism" sort of ironic. What you mention there is pure capitalism.

It was more likely just an unstable upstream stream due to how it seemed have a range of 200kbs to 1100kbs when I tested it last. Though I no longer pay for service from time warner cable so maybe they stopped doing that after jan of this year. But that's unlikely.

A lot of it likely had to do with the fact the cable leading to the house was spilt in two most of the time I had the service. I guess the installer thought it would be funny to reuse old cables till the customer called in about service issues for months on end.

Any ways, I enjoy my 4G LTE for upload far more. It's way better and more stable for uploads. (Yes it's unlimited and it cost less than 57.99 a month for data. )

the fact that players like netflix are giving isps some extra cash to carry their heavy traffic loads, probably helps to postpone isps like twc's need to cap and charge overages. now that i'm streaming 720p off my roku3 a few hours each day, i'm sure my usage is also a few hundred gigabytes per month.
