[WIN8] Win 8 Errors on New Laptop - Why?Purchased this about a week ago:
MSI GS70 2OD-002US 17.3" Full HD Gaming Notebook Computer, Intel Core i7-4700HQ 2.4GHz, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD+256GB SSD, Windows 8, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M
After a few days laptop would restart at least once a day with smiley frown reporting
"Bad Pool Header" or another time "IRQL Not Less Or Equal" or no named error.
What would cause this? |
|
|
My first guess would be a bad stick of RAM, with random errors it's usually RAM. Download Memtest and test your memory. Although your laptop is new it just might be a bad stick out of the box, seen it numerous times. |

Also, it may help to take a look at the minidump files from the crashes with a debugger.
Can you zip up the minidump file(s) in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and attach to a post in this thread?
If you have problems zipping the minidump file(s) copy the minidump file(s) to another location such as a folder on the Desktop. |

Here is the detail from the crash dump you provided:
On Tue 3/4/2014 1:01:49 AM GMT your computer crashed crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\030314-5671-01.dmp This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x5A440) Bugcheck code: 0xA (0x0, 0x2, 0x0, 0xFFFFF80265915EB0) Error: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System company: Microsoft Corporation description: NT Kernel & System Bug check description: This indicates that Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above. This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem. The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.
You also haven't applied the 8.1 update and who knows what other updates as well.
Also, what friggin TimeZone are you in? |

There appears to be involvement of the fastfat.sys (Fast FAT File System Driver) and the wdcsam64.sys (Western Digital SCSI Architecture Model (SAM) WDM driver) appears as an "unloaded" driver.
That is a good indication the error is occurring with an attached Western Digital USB drive.
Looking at the "raw stack" shows the WinFPdrv.sys appearing to access memory ahead of the fastfat.sys:
fffff880`1eb09648 fffff880`06d973af fastfat!FatCommonRead+0x767 fffff880`1eb09650 fffff880`1eb09860 fffff880`1eb09658 00000000`00000000 fffff880`1eb09660 00000000`00000000 fffff880`1eb09668 fffffa80`1d1ec900 fffff880`1eb09670 fffff8a0`127a7000 fffff880`1eb09678 fffffa80`0ee58040 fffff880`1eb09680 fffffa80`0edffa40 fffff880`1eb09688 fffff880`04b85310*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for WinFPdrv.sys *** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for WinFPdrv.sys WinFPdrv+0x5310
The WinFPdrv.sys appears to be a Folder Lock driver so try uninstalling Folder Lock and see if the error resolves.
The version of Folder Lock installed may not be fully compatible with Windows 8.
Also, can you provide more minidump files to see if the errors are consistent?

Folder Lock drivers are still present on the system.
How did you uninstall Folder Lock?
Do you have a recent System Restore Point created prior to installing Folder Lock? |

using their uninstall (with required pw). No options to uninstall in Control Panel or with Revo.
Btw, finally have 8.1 installed& no reboots... yet.
Also, are you aware of any issue with Win 8/8.1 and Avast? |

Well 8.1 is installed. No more crashes...but now
When I first turn on pc I get an endless 'please wait' screen. If I shut down manually & immediately restart I go quickly to log on screen.
Any suggestions? |

Well as of today, 50% bootup is IRQL error with auto restart ad 50% is very long boot time.
I see comments re: corrupted user accounts, starup apps, video driver problems, etc |

Perhaps it is time to return the computer to the seller for a refund.
(As already suggested.) |

I won't disagree that perhaps you should contact the seller for further advice. I do believe though that there is a good chance that the errors are software (driver) related. Presently there appears to be left over Avast drivers loaded along with Bitdefender drivers which could be a recipe for stability issues. There also appears to be an older version of SuperAntiSpyware installed which could be problematic. There appears to be still a Folder Lock driver (WinFPdrv.sys) loaded. Have you considered a "refresh" of Windows?: » windows.microsoft.com/en ··· reset-pc |
