So far, Ford is the only company who has setup the capability to update your firmware via USB stick (Telsa can do it OTA).

I've had to take my 2 year old Subaru in 2x for firmware updates, one of which required a full-on hardware replacement to accomplish.

I wouldn't assume firmware updates are going to be standard issue.

Further, I wouldn't buy a car with this because I'm an Android user and don't want any more lock-in than I have with my current Mac gear.

I just had a Chevy rental car and it updated OTA. (I stumbled a crossed it trying to figure the damn thing out). I don't see this procedure being uncommon at all as these device become more and more popular.
