Netgear → WNDR3400. No range?

I'm having problems with range. It only reaches my room and a few rooms nearby but not the living room. I have a linksys wrt54g, but I don't know if its any better.

What settings should I mess with to make it better?
Is the linksys router any better at speed/range?

Any better routers out there that aren't too expensive?

Would it work the other way around too? Like use linksys as my main router and the netgear one as an access point?

I only ask because I want the faster one in my room (don't know which one is better) and the other in the living room..

do I still need the installation cd for linksys?

The Linksys only does b/g speeds so you wouldn't want that one in your room.

I don't know about the installation cd I had Tomato firmware on mine and set it up using that.

I followed the steps to making the linksys one an access point.
It said to use the same SSID as the main.

So if I go to the airport settings I should only find one by that name?

The last step says to connect the linksys router to my main router, can I not disconnect it now and move the linksys router into the living room?

Yes it should have the same SSID when you get within range it should switch to using the closest wireless, that's the way it's supposed to work anyway.
