[Speed/Latency] Verizon DSL - Frustrating Performance

I've been using Verizon DSL for about 6 years now. For a while, service was sufficient, but for the last year I've had nothing but negative experiences with it. I've been experiencing slow speeds and frequent disconnects. I've called tech support numerous times only to get the typical responses that do not address the problem. "Have you tried restarting your computer? Have you tried restarting your modem? Have you tried restarting your router?" I've done all of these suggestions more times than I can count with 0 results. I'd love to switch my internet provider, but Verizon DSL is the fastest available internet in my area (sad). I wish Verizon would make an effort to help their customers, but with my current and past experiences I don't believe that is going to happen any time soon. For the past week I can barely use the internet. Websites load extremely slow. I can't play any online games because the latency is too high. I've even made sure the two computers in the household are not downloading anything when the internet drops out. I've tried using better DNS servers. Nothing has helped. Is there someone that could possibly help me? It doesn't seem like Verizon will.

Here's a traceroute i ran

My modem is an Actiontec GT701D. I'm also using a Linksys WRT54G router.

Here are my transciever statistics:
My download and upload speed listed are what i should be getting, but I can't even watch a youtube video on 360p straight through because it pauses and freezes every couple seconds. I would think that with those speeds listed below would be able to stream a 360p video all the way through.

Re: [Speed/Latency] Verizon DSL - Frustrating Performance

You obfuscated the address you are trying to traceroute so I cannot tell if it responds to Ping (ICMP echo request) or not. ICMP is handled as low priority and in some cases IT departments either turn it off or block it.

Try doing traceroute to stable sites like this one. What is the result of speed test? That will provide better idea of speed related issues then Ping.

Modem states are confusing, 98 dB attenuation indicates your circuit is about 25,000 feet much too long for DSL, also downstream margin is being reported as 0 which makes no sense.

The reason the first address was obfuscated was because it was my public ip address. I used this site (»www.giganews.com/line_info.html) and copied and pasted the trace route information into the post. Below i've added a trace route that i ran from the command prompt to dslreports.com.

I forgot to add this into my previous post, but here are my transciever statistics after verizon "resolved" my line issue. note that they cut my connection speed in half and the snr margin and line attenuation aren't much different.

Gotta love verizon support. I woke up to a text message saying that "your verizon repair request has been resolved. thank you for choosing verizon". My ticket was escalated and they confirmed the noise issue which they were supposed to fix. When i looked at the statistics on my modem and the noise is still just as high as it was and my donwload/upload speed has been cut in half. Here are my modem statistics now:

DSL Status
VPI: 0
VCI: 35
DSL Mode Setting: 1
DSL Negotiated Mode: ADSL2Plus
Connection Status:
Speed (down/up): 1787 / 447 Kbps
ATM QoS class: UBR
Near End CRC Errors : 0/0
Far End CRC Errors : 0/0
Near End CRC(Within last 30 mins) : 0/0
Far End CRC(Within last 30 mins) : 0/0
Near End RS FEC : 0/0
Far End RS FEC : 0/0
Near End FEC(Within last 30 mins) : 0/0
Far End FEC(Within last 30 mins) : 0/0
Discarded Packets(Within last 30 mins): 0
SNR Margin (Downstream/Upstream): 0/29
Attenuation (Downstream/Upstream): 92/24

I did notice that they switched the DSL Negotiated mode from G.DMT to ADSL2Plus. Not sure how much of a difference that makes when my speeds are so slow. Plus i'm not getting all the FEC errors like before, which is good i suppose.

I'm aware that lowering the connection speed could improve the SNR margin, but shouldn't i see those results in my dsl statistics? Or am i wrong?

Just called verizon again and they're going to send a replacement modem. They're saying that they did not see any issues with noise on the line this time and a defective modem is the culprit. Hopefully they're right and this actually fixes the issue.

A new modem might definitely help with getting the attenuation and downstream margin to reasonable levels. Those statistics don't seem to be getting reported correctly. Overall it seems Verizon did something, so that's a good sign.

ADSL2+ doubles the number of tones (2.2MHz) increasing speed on short circuits.

There is a reach extended ADSL2 profile for long circuits. It cuts the upper frequency bound in half but increases transmit power. End result is faster speed over long circuits, which if your attenuation numbers are accurate is your case.

Agree with Smith6612 See Profile nothing to lose by trying another modem, especially since Verizon agreed to send out a replacement.

Given your situation always worth plugging the modem into the Telco NID test jack. That disconnects inside wiring. If stats improve troubleshoot wiring/equipment within your residence.

misspoke ADSL2/ADSL2+, corrected info

The 701 actiontec router was garbage out of the box. Horrible noise issues and the like. Get a different router on that line...

Judging by those numbers you are either near the high end of the copper loop that DSL can work on or your copper pair has degraded in some way from the Central Office to your home. What have the Field Technicians said to you when they come to look at it?
