[WIN8] Explorer still works as an FTP Client??

On the Charter web site it says:

"Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer can also be used as FTP clients."

And I know that USED to be true, but I do not believe it is true now... On my Win8 box, if I try to open: "ftp://webpages.charter.net", I get a "This Page Cannot be Displayed" warning. In the old days I would get a box asking for the username and password.

Can I still use IE or WE for FTP in Win8?? If so, why doesn't Charter work???

it should be:

»ftp://username@webpages.charter.net

I get the same warning page either way. I believe adding the username first only serves to "pre-fill" the username field.

This is what is SUPPOSED to pop up - where you can enter your user name and password.

Perhaps... I just popped open IE 11 (11.0.9600.16521) and went to »ftp://ftp.freshrpms.net/ and it loaded just fine... when I try »ftp://webpages.charter.net from any browser (chrome, ff, ie 11) I get page cannot be displayed errors... I suspect its that there is no ftp server at webpages.charter.net.

Good luck

Thanks. There always HAS been an FTP server there! I have used it for many years! And Charter still advertises it:
»www.myaccount.charter.co ··· eid=2172

Ahh... but you are correct! I can open your site in IE and WE -- and it is an FTP site....

I must assume the Charter FTP site is down?? And has been so for at least 24 hours.... :-(

______________

I don't believe Chrome will do FTP without an extension, correct?

Chrome handles ftp without an extension--same as Firefox.

I do see references to it everywhere as well... contact them they most likely don't realize it is not working

Since the OP is trying for ftp access and not http access perhaps:

»ftp://username@webpages.charte ··· username

Re: [WIN8] Explorer still works as an FTP Client??

Browsers make terrible FTP clients.

Terrible is better than no access - which is what I have now! FileZilla won't connect, and now IE / WE don't seem to be functioning the way they used to!

I can get to the site via h t t p://, but if I try »ftp:// it won't connect and does not offer me the page to enter my password...

This doesn't appear to be an issue with IE but with your ISP. Have you contacted them?

Easy way to check - use the command-line client.

(I assume Win8 has one, since every Windows NT system since forever has had one; it's ftp the way it was intended to be )

Thanks, dave. Do you have a link to an easy way to learn how to do that - or... do I just use Google. :)

From a cmd box:
C:\>ftp webpages.charter.net
> ftp: connect :Connection timed out
ftp>

It never gets to a USER: prompt...

Seems like this is a problem with Charter??

Add: if I add the /(username) to the end, it says: "Unknown host..."

It works like every other command-line ftp client

You'd use user name to log in, but since you can't connect, there's nowhere to log in to. The connection timeout basically tells you there is no ftp server at that address. Which, I think, essentially answers your initial question.

"/user" is not acceptable ftp syntax. If an ftp client allows specification of a username on the command line, it's generally user@host .

Here's a command summary: »windowsitpro.com/network ··· p-client

It is, did you ever contact them to ask why the ftp server is down (or what to use now if they changed it, but never updated their help files)?

Re: [WIN8] Explorer still works as an FTP Client??

Thanks to all. I think the server is just F'd up. Thanks for the links. I'll try to get a hold of Charter when I can - usually a multi-hour affair.
