[Connectivity] Verizon changed acsess to ASLAM NOW I wierd num's

I have had MANY connection problems over the last 2 months. Now they changed me to ASLAM(I do not even know what it is). Please look at my wan numbers, normally it should not be reliable. But it has not retrained at all. My overhead is about 50%.
Actual download is 956Kbps.

Why does this WORK?

I don't know why you consider this as 'working' when your actual download speed is only 2/3 of what your line is provisioned at... A quick scan of your modem stats indicates that the line from the CO to your modem is probably OK as the speeds are where they should be. The reason for your observed slow download speed is most probably that the connection is experiencing abnormally high packet loss within your local network according to the stats. Have you ever optimize your internal network connections? This needs to be done on each of the network devices in order to get maximum speed. Some suggested reading:

»DSL FAQ »How do I optimize my MTU and RWIN settings?

»ubuntuforums.org/showthr ··· t=872346

FYI.

I am using win7 64bit, I think the rwin and mtu are set by the operating system. Verizon put me on a ASLAM and a AGSL2+. Would this cause the high overhead and the high download attn of 61db. But it is stable and the market numbers are the as it was before they started screwing with it. The old overhead was 1164Kbps.

That was my impression too, and it's has been years that I've looked at connection optimization. However, I noticed that the latest version of the tool from SpeedGuide is now Win7 compatible too. It might be worth a look at the current MTU and Rwin settings as I think packets are being dropped within your network causing your slow throughput. It should be closer to ~1350Kbps or higher--max of ~1500Kbps .

How far are you from the CO? Is the 61dB consistent with the actual distance? Take a look at this as a rough guide:

As to your other questions, I'll leave that to more knowledgeable readers to respond...

sounds like they may have put you on a different ASAM. The MUX that connects your line is usually called an ASAM or DSLAM. There is a difference but the terms are sometimes interchanged. Test your line a couple times and see if those errors are incrementing.

The connection is stable on the ASDL2+ and ASLAM. I just don't understand the speed with overhead is 1792Kbps and the market speed is 956Kbps. Why so much loss?
