[OhDoh] Road signs...

For those who never saw any of the Burma Shave signs, here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930's and '40's.

Before there were interstates, when everyone drove the old 2-lane roads, Burma Shave signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers' fields. They were small red signs with white letters. Five signs, about 100 feet apart, each containing 1 line of a 4 line couplet... and the obligatory 5th sign advertising Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream.

I can remember seeing these signs along the roads when we went to the Ozarks for summer vacation. And this was in the 1950's. Our job as kids was to watch for the signs, and then Gramps would slow down while we looked for more and read them out loud. Some made sense to us -- we were little kids, after all -- and some had to be explained to us.

Ah, memories.

Do these bring back any old memories?
If not, you're merely a child.
If they do, then you're old as dirt -- LIKE ME!

I have a booklet that explains the complete history of Who, What, Where and When of the Burma Shave company. It also includes every one of the Burma Shave slogans that they ever used. I would have to go digging in my DVD's but I think I have a DVD about them too.

Those are cool, I never saw any of them. We need signs like that today, signs about driving safe. My brother is one of those crazy drivers, me, I never exceed 5 over the limit, I've witnessed way too many crashes.
