Comcast XFINITY → [Bill] Charging install fee for own modem

When did Comcast start charging for a customer owned modem to have it activated. I upgraded yesterday from a leased Comcast modem to my own modem and I called the local Comcast office here in the Mpls/St. Paul area to give them the mac address of the modem for the change of equipment. Today I received an email saying that I will be charged a $30.00 fee for the change. If this is the case with Comcast now I will be looking for another ISP even if it means a dial up connection. I am tired of getting nickel and dime to death with these outrages fee's

This is the kind of crap that makes me think twice about moving to Comcast.

It's obviously a mistake. What did they say when you called them?
