Yes, I've tried it and it works fine. No issues whatsoever. But it will then RE-offer the update to 4.5, yes ? BTW, is it the MSE app itself or Win Update (or both) which are offering the update ? |

Stated by Satch:
"Consider Virtual Machine Software for XP. If you run XP in a Virtualized environment you can't be infected."
and I am asking: What are the opinions of this forum members on the security of continued use of XP-Mode in Virtual PC over Windows 7? |
|
|
Well, it's prima facie false that a Windows XP guest virtual machine can't be infected. Of course it can sustain infection, just like a physical host. |

It's the Win Update; several of my VMs updated automatically so I'm in the process of removing the new version and re-installing the 4.4.304. I then run Windows Update using MSIE, and it offers the new version and also the nag-screen update for XP. I make sure both are NOT checked, then check the "don't show this again" box for each. Finally I make sure that the Automatic Updates control panel applet in the VM is set to "download but do not install" to prevent them from being pushed in again... |

After you remove 4.5 and install 4.4.304, run Windows Update then 'hide' the 4.5 update so it's never installed. I don't see any other to skip Microsoft's scammy messages. |

I already have my Win Update set to "Ask BEFORE Download...." on all machines, XP or otherwise. Thanks. |

I don't see any other [way] to skip Microsoft's scammy messages. Relatively painless. Thanks. |

Woke up to this this morning. It looks like MSE is disabled but no it's still working. |
|
|
The 4.4 version linked above will not do this.
Also, people should check their Scheduled Tasks as Microsoft inserted two tasks to popup end-of-life notifications either with the 4.5 Security Essentials or via KB2934207 (which is Microsoft's pop-up spam update which should be removed and blocked). |

It looks like MSE is disabled but no it's still working. The FUD about XP continues, courtesy of its author, even ! Now they are using COLOUR to subliminally 'whip us into shape' ! |

More FUD(D) ! Next thing, there'll be a wabbit appear and say something like : "Hey Doc, know what's up ? - Yer windows, THAT's what !"(Then again, maybe not, as that would cost MS woyalties.) |

said by Davesnothere:Now they are using COLOUR to subliminally 'whip us into shape' ! Well the red icon on the taskbar looks exactly like the one when MSE is disabled. So does the dialog itself. One has to read the text to see it's just another effort, by Microsoft, to have users give them $$$ by purchasing Win8 (and a new PC most likely). PS: A full version of MSE 4.5.216 still isn't available. Not sure if that's related to XP support ending or not. |

Here's my MSE 4.5 message:
I think I'll leave this nagware hidden. |

All is well, as indicated by the green icon. What end of life?

FYI the MSE 4.5.216.0 service started shutting down by itself and hanging my XP SP3 machine yesterday. Even after rebooting it this morning the issue remained. I've uninstalled MSE 4.5.216 and reinstalled MSE 4.4.304. That seems to have fixed things. Perhaps it is related to this WinXP and/or Win2003 hanged systems because of SC Forefront Endpoint Protection faulty updateBTW MSE 4.5.216 is running fine on my Win7 x64 box. I'm currently running an offline scan on my WinXP machine. PS: The offline scan didn't find any malware and MSE 4.4.304 seems to be working fine (with a green icon ) If you follow the links in the above article it appears to have been a bad definition update. Or perhaps Microsoft was sending XP users another "message" |

At the two sites linked in my last post, and other similar sites.
I trust and use those 2 sites and a couple of the others, most of which archive older versions of apps as well as current ones. |

This update buggered up my XP laptop. The latest autoupdate fixed it.
It also killed the drivers for the wifi card. I had to uninstall/reinstall the driver and application for the card. It works now.
Yahoo Messenger IM is going crazy for some reason. I'll probably have to clean that up also.
Incidents like this MS FUBAR should be reported under a new topic rather than getting buried deep in other threads IMO... |
