Re: New machinesaid by me1212:an i5 will work fine. Its not so much the extra threads, but they can help, as much as it is the higher cache and clock speed the i7 usually have. Overclock the i5 and you should be fine, for the majority of games. Which game(s) were you making you consider the i7? For me personally there is no particular game I want to play in that category but I like to look at current game requirements to see what the future holds. Wolfenstein was that game I saw that had that minimum requirement: » store.steampowered.com/a ··· 7_15__13 |

That needs an i7 920, 2.6ghz processor. A modern i5 is fine still. Sure stuff like crysis 3 that uses physics on freaking everything can benefit from an i7, but even there my i5 plays just fine. That said if you want an i7 and can afford an i7 then get it. |

Looks good. I'd just go with Win8.1 though. |

No you shouldn't need a new keyboard. It is color coded for either mouse or keyboard. That is why it is purple and green. |

Awesome thanks guys.
Can I turn the "touch screen" home screen of Windows 8 off in 8.1? So it boots to a bog standard desktop? |

Yeah. With 8.1 and a program like classic shell, you can completely skip their home screen and use the desktop like in win7 |

My Windows 8.1 Update 1 boots directly to the Desktop. Only when I click the "Start" button does it go to that funky app area. |

Same here. Although I still get tricked into hitting the windows key on my keyboard occasionally. Likely because I have 7 at work. But 8.1 boots to the desktop. |

Parts are starting to arrive. The GFX card is fucking huge. At least 3 times bigger than any I've seen before. |

All built. No Windows yet so no chance to play with it but it all turns on. I have a couple of silly questions however, the first concerning the GFX card power. It came with 2 power leads which obviously go in the card but the other end of each cable has 2 x molex connectors. The PSU has a cable for molex but I've had to use all 4 molex connectors on this cable . It works, just seems a bit of a long winded way to do it. Secondly the PSU has these slots. » tpucdn.com/reviews/Corsa ··· mall.jpgAre all the 3x2's the same? Just the wording seems odd. I have 3 SATA devices but the cable won't reach the third as the bay faces right angle to the other 2. So I need two of the slots for SATA and then a third for the GFX card chain. I assume this is safe? Thanks a lot |

The 6-pin pci to 4 pin molex is for compatibility. Some older power supplies do not have PCI-E 6-pin connectors (or have one, but not two).
The 3x2 connectors are all the same on the PSU. |

I'd go this route as well in the meantime, it'll at least let you test drive your computer, even if it won't give you the opportunity to do a lot of gaming. |

Those are adapters that came with the graphics card. You don't need to use them as you have 2 6+2 pin pci-express connectors. The 6+2 means they have 2 pins that breakaway so they can fit in either 6 or 8 pin pci-express connections. Your card needs one 6 pin and one 8 pin so you would put the full 6+2 in one and only 6 pins of the other (without the 2 pin breakaway). You can see this on image C here: » www.techpowerup.com/revi ··· ose1.jpgNOTE don't confuse this with B, which is your 8 pin eps/atx12v which should be keyed differently(but you might still be able to use it improperly if you try to force it in). The eps should be one of the non-modular cables that came preattached and the pci-express should be modular but double check it as they should be marked. Then you shouldn't need any additional connectors for the graphics card (no 4 pin molex etc.) edit: certainly try linux out on it if you don't have a copy of windows. You might find you don't need windows any more. Some games are finicky on linux but many games will run under wine. |

Thanks guys, all ready to rock and roll once Windows arrives.
I did try to test with Vista but I got a blank screen / freezing after it started. I checked and it seems Vista doesn't like modern machines so fingers crossed it is just that. |

All up and running, boots super fast, runs WoW at max with no issues (60+ FPS even in Org) and it isn't having issues with Batman Arkham Asylum at max either. GTAV will be the biggest challenge but I doubt it will struggle.
Thanks for all your help. |

I figure If I can cable manage that Rosewill Blackhawk decently, that 750D should be a breeze. All my new Noctua Redux fans and Corsair Metallic Graphite sleeved cables should go nicely with the greyish tone of ACX 780's. So I'll definitely have some pics for you guys Now we just need to get some from Cat666 |
