quick question for those that use monitoring tools inside of linux. i have a (self-imposed) requirement for a quick and dirty monitoring tool for a contest that i run involving networking. i'm spinning up an ubuntu vm running apache2 for webpage access for the contestants to reach when everything is configured correctly -- however -- i'd like to provide them incentive and a quick visual on my part to verify that things are done 100% correct.
my goal is to find a linux tool that provides a graphical ping to a set of hosts that i define. simple "green" for reachable, "red" for unreachable would suffice. i'd like to put this up on a display screen for the contestants to see while they're working.
i've looked at setting something up within nagios and observium -- but its too much for what i need. something like "pinginfoview" for linux would be completely ok.
if you have some tool, software, or even quick and dirty script -- i'd love to hear it.
Either of those can monitor a lot more then just network connectivity but if that is all you need you only need to install the software on the web server and provide a list of hosts to be checked.
