[Info] Cisco Router for home connection

Hi,

I'm looking for a Cisco router for my home connection. I've been looking at the ISR 28xx series; in particular the 2851 as I've a 200Mbps connection from my ISP.

Can anyone comment on what the fan noise on these are like? I'm looking for something that will hum away pretty quiet and won't drive the other half insane I've used an 881w in the past and looking for something with similar noise levels but with better performance ...

Any other suggestions beyond the 28xx series are welcomed. Would prefer to stay with Cisco if at all possible

Many thanks,
Mike

For a 200 Mbps connection and low-to-none fan noise, I can think of Juniper SRX 100 firewall. Though it is not a Cisco product, the firewall model is still current and is relatively cheap. Here is some spec to review.

If you want to stay with Cisco, here is some specification

ASA Firewall
»www.cisco.com/c/en/us/pr ··· son.html

ISR 2921 (among others)
»www.cisco.com/web/partne ··· ance.pdf

The 2921 router will hum. For those who are not used to it (i.e. never stay in data center for hours), the hum will drive them crazy

The same hum issue applies to the ASA 5512-X or 5515-X firewall models. In addition, the 2921 router, ASA 5512-X, and ASA 5515-X costs more than the Juniper SRX 100 firewall.

The 2800 series are phasing out, in addition to its incapability to support 200 Mbps speed. If you need to stay in 1st generation ISR, a 3845 model is better bet though it is also phasing out.

For any baseline indication of performance, always go to this guide. That being said, 2851's
going to be below what your ISP can give. Based on the PDF, you're looking at least a 3845
or 7206/NPE, if not an ISR G2 2921+.

Loud... bar none. I don't have exact decibel figures, but expect to put the gear into
a closet / garage / basement, if only to save your sanity.

There is some Noise Level measured in dBA found in the following link.

Agreed on both points.
I have a 2801 which is louder than my 2960S gigabit switch, and it isn't doing much more than call manager. There is no firewall, no NAT, no ACL's. I realise the 2851 is a larger form factor which means the fans will probably run slower than my 1U box, but I would never describe them as quiet!
And whilst we're on the subject of noise, I have a Meraki MX220 and MS100 switch and firewall on test. Both are RIDICULOUSLY loud. The fans seem to run flat out all the time regardless of load. I also have an MS320 which is nice and quiet, but is as near as damn it 500mm deep, which is quite large for a Layer 3 switch with PoE.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I'll take a look at the 3845 and 2921. I'll also try and find a spot where they can't be heard

SRX100 only has 10/100 interfaces. You'd need SRX210 minimum which has 2x 10/100/1000 and 6x 10/100.

I have a 2821 and its so quiet Ive forgotten to turn it off once.

My 2811 is a whiney beach.

3825 might also do, and a little smaller. They are pretty quick little boxes.

But dont forget that x800 series are all software driven boxes, so the more features you turn on the lower throughput you will achieve.

Juniper SRX are extremely quick, but there is a decent learning curve.

as a point of clarity -- all isr are software driven. so its the x800s and the x900s. the difference being is that the cpu in the x900 series is faster. TomS_ See Profile knows this, but i'm clarifying for the sake of the group.

TomS_, tubbynet - thanks for the additional suggestions, much appreciated!

Reckon I might opt for the 3825 or 3845. I've taken a look at the noise levels for each and they range from 50-58dBa. Might need to look for some closet space for these
