[DSL] Why am I still on sbcglobal.net?

I've been having periodic cut offs from the internet.
I am supposed to be on DSLExtreme now.
I just did a tracert to www.google.com
and it came back with sbcglobal.net.
Is this normal?

Server: 68.94.156.1
Address 1: 68.94.156.1 dnsr1.sbcglobal.net

That looks like the output from 'nslookup':
C:\util\dig>nslookup www.google.com 68.94.156.1
Server: dnsr1.sbcglobal.net
Address: 68.94.156.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: www.google.com
Addresses:  2607:f8b0:4005:800::1014
          74.125.239.112
          74.125.239.114
          74.125.239.115
          74.125.239.116
          74.125.239.113

What does 'ipconfig -all' show? Your output appears to still be using AT&T (SBC Global) Anycast DNS servers.

FWIW, an IPv4 trace would look similar to this (depending on your actual forward path ISP source):
C:\util\dig>tracert -4 www.google.com

Tracing route to www.google.com [74.125.239.51]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms Chihiro [192.168.102.1]
  2 24 ms 25 ms 23 ms 173-228-7-1.dsl.static.sonic.net [173.228.7.1]
  3 24 ms 24 ms 23 ms gig1-4.cr1.lsatca11.sonic.net [70.36.243.13]
  4 23 ms 24 ms 23 ms 0.xe-5-1-0.gw.pao1.sonic.net [69.12.211.1]
  5 25 ms 23 ms 24 ms ae2.0.gw.equinix-sj.sonic.net [50.0.2.14]
  6 25 ms 25 ms 24 ms eqixsj-google-gige.google.com [206.223.116.21]
  7 25 ms 25 ms 25 ms 216.239.49.168
  8 26 ms 25 ms 26 ms 72.14.232.35
  9 25 ms 25 ms 26 ms nuq04s19-in-f19.1e100.net [74.125.239.51]

Trace complete.

The routers along your route would be revealing. The '-4' in my command forces the IPv4 trace; my line is configured to prefer IPv6 when the destination advertise an IPv6 route.

I've been trying to switch over to DSLExtreme and terminate my Pacbell DSL or SBCglobal or ATT but it looks like I can't do it yet.

Hi satow. You're connected to us through a resold AT&T TAS server, hence why it's showing an AT&T DNS address (that's what you'll pull by default if you don't manually set a different DNS). If you want to use a different DNS, you're welcome to put in our DNS (66.51.205.100 / 66.51.206.100) or Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) or OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220) for example. However, as long as you're able to access the sites you're trying to reach, you probably don't need to worry about it; a DNS server is basically like an 'internet phone book' which lets you look up 'names' (URLs) and get the appropriate 'numbers to call' (IPs) - so unless you're getting a bad match-up it's usually a non-issue.

Your connection 'cutting off', however, is a different matter. That's definitely something we'd want to address. Your looplength is, unfortunately, very long (about 14,000') so it's possible this is a sync-related issue. When your connection cuts out, take a look at the DSL light on the modem - see if it's still steady green or if it's flashing or out. If that light is flashing or out, then that confirms it's a sync-related issue (probably due to distance, which unfortunately isn't something we can change without moving you to a new house; I checked, no RT's in your area). If the light is still steady green, however, then it may be something else causing the disconnect that we might fix.

Thanks Nick for the reassurance. Now I have to move my wifey's email over from pacbell.net to google.mail, which will be interesting.

The new Asus router is very fast. The AC protocol is pretty good. I bought a used Drobo FS, replaced the fan with a super quiet one, replaced battery, upgraded the firmware and plugged it into the router lan and I can stream 1080p video stored on the Drobo over wifi.

I can watch youtube videos now without much glitching. The only ones I can't see are the HD ones, but SD format works fine.

Thanks again Nick!

So how does DSLX set speed profiles for resold AT&T? At 14,000 feet I am guessing you can't set the standard "Pro" profile (3008/512), but have to set the standard "Express" profile (1536/384)? Do you offer "Fusion" for the OP's loop, and might it gain him some extra speed if he could get it?

Try going to 'mail.yahoo.com' and logging in with your '@pacbell.net' account details. I left AT&T in April, 2011, but I still have access to my '@pacbell.net' accounts. As long as you have no past due bills with AT&T, they officially allow former customers continued access as free, Yahoo! web mail accounts.

The new Asus router is very fast.

If you are interested in playing with IPv6, the ASUS RT-AC66U works well with a Hurricane Electric "https://tunnelbroker.net" 6in4 tunnel.

Thanks NormanS for the great info. I'm glad that a person can maintain their email account after leaving pacbell.net.. aka sbcglobal aka attyahoo aka...

I'll check out tunnelbroker.net. Looks interesting...

Unfortunately, no Fusion available in his area yet (we can offer Fusion at that distance, but that particular CO doesn't have Fusion DSLAMs installed). At that distance, yes, we're having to work with Express 1.5.
