Re: [Speed] Comcast 2014 Side Discussion about Doubling Speeds

said by clocks11:

Got my new AC1200 router. I hooked it up, and I get worse speeds than I did with my draft N router. I tested on my desktop & laptop with similar results. Before I start buying AC adaptors, anyone have any advice. I though N (300) should be able to meet the 105meg.

»stage.results.speedtest. ··· 6344.png

Edit: I just dragged the laptop over the the router and plugged in the ethernet. Ran two speed tests, two differnt sites, both 120/23. My wireless just seems hosed no matter the router. All but that Asus. I keep going through the settings to see what I may have set wrong.

I know this sounds like a stupid question and may be my tiredness showing, but have you taken everything but the modem and one computer out of the loop and tried testing?

EDIT: Well now, you've eliminated one thing and know now that you've got your speed. Time to go find out why your wireless sucks now.

You mean bypassing the router? Not sure that's the problem, since I can get 102meg using ethernet to the router.

The crazy thing is I could get 57meg when I had blast, with a mediocre N300 router. Then when I went to Extreme, same equipment, I'd get 45-50meg. Now, fancy new AC1200 router, and I can't get 20meg.

I guess the next thing I'll try is buying a AC adaptor for my desktop. But if my laptops and other requirement are going to be limited to 20ish meg(via their internal N wireless), not sure it's worth me paying for the faster speeds.

BTW - Is it better to use auto channel select or pick one? I've tried both, and didn't see a difference.

The other odd thing is I noticed my Roku seem to show up as a wifi network. I unplug them, but it didnt help my speeds.

do you have a dual band router? i've had very good success with giving the 2.5 and 5ghz bands different ssid's and specifically selecting the 5ghz band. i can get 100mbps speedtest results with my 2013 nexus 7 (abgn) and the 5ghz band of my asus rt-n66u (i have 105mpbs service with comcast).

I have: D-Link Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router (DIR-860L) . When I get my AC600 adapter in a day or two I'll see if that helps. Otherwise I'll buy a AC1200 adapter. Actually, was something I was reading it sounds like AC1200 adapters require USB3 ports for full speeds?

Right now none of my N dongles use the 5ghz band.

Any advantage/dis-advantage to using something like this instead of a wifi dongle? Doesn't seem to cost much my than an AC adapter of similar specs.

Pros:
Integrated GbE switch
1300mbps (three stream device)
better antenna design/power

Cons:
Size
Requires external power

An "AC600" USB dongle isn't going to compare if both are able to operate at full capacity for the reasons we've discussed earlier.

It was on sale for $29.99. I ordered it. I have a feeling it may work better for me than the dongle. I'll set it up in my extra bedroom when my second pc is, and work laptop. It seemed to have better specs, for less money, than most the dongles.

If I still have issues, I'm just going to splurge and buy the nighthawk router for $180. It will be way more than I'd ever thought I'd spent on a router, but I am sick of f'ing around with this crap, and word is it seems to be the best available at the moment.

Unless it and the computer it's connected to uses USB 3.0?

It claims 2x2 on the site... Is AC1300 2x2 or 3x3?

ASUS routers are the best out there right now. RT-AC66U can be flashed to DD-WRT...

If only USB 3.0 chipsets were the sole limitation. Some of the more substantial looking Asus, Amped, Engenius models look like they might support high throughput, but the ones that are thumbnail sized? I highly doubt it.

The WUMC710 supports 1300mbps via 802.11ac, so there's no way it can be a 2x2:2 configuration. It must at least be 2x3:3 and is more than likely 3x3:3.

Ok, I got my first AC600 dongle. $17 Edimax from Amazon. Finally getting what I should, even over wireless. I don't feel stupid for adding Extreme for $10/month, though I hope I get the free update at some point over the next month or so.

So is 2x2 AC1300 then? I'm so confused... Just as we got everything to three-stream N, now we have this ac mess...

It's 3x3 AC 5 GHz only. It doesn't support 2.4 GHz.

This is kind of going off topic .

I agree the tiny thumbnail size isn't gonna be that good for range and reception, tiny tiny antennas, but with technology being how it is, it might be a surprise.

I know it is 5ghz only. So what is 2x2 vs. 3x3? I guess they are counting 2.4ghz N300 or N450 bandwidth as well, which just makes it all the more confusing...

I disagree. MEDIALINK Wireless-N routers are the best out there right now.

A) I've never heard of them. B) They don't make anything relevant to this discussion. Their whole line is low-end crap that doesn't have the 5ghz band. Their fastest one is N300. N900 is so last year. Now we've moved on to AC routers of various speed configurations. ASUS reigns supreme in the standalone router market.
