asbestos ceiling tiles?I'm pretty sure they are but I want other opinions.. A few tiles are missing or dropped to floor. |
|

You're never going to know without testing. I have ceiling tiles in my basement that look exactly like that but they don't contain asbestos at all. |

Likely? Sure. Definitely? Need to test. |

I'll bet those are just cellulose fireproof tiles, just like the roof insulation sold. they are NOT WHITE, but gray.. you wouldn't want those safe tiles falling in your dinner, though.. or on your bed while sleeping. they can be properly fixed.. |

Can local places test the tiles or do I have to send a sample and wait for the results?
Lots of areas around here have tiles missing or stuff that fell to the floor.. I only ask before I start cleaning my office space and doing above ceiling work. |

Odds are extremely good they contain asbestos. It wasn't until sometime in the early 1990's that they stopped manufacturing these with asbestos.
This more than likely is not a do-it-yourself project. Improper removal can contaminate the entire structure and put those who inhabit the building at serious risk of exposure. |

you should see the asbestos rope like strands sticking out of a broken part if it has asbestos. here's a list of manufacturers that have used, and have not used asbestos. look on the back of a fallen tile for the name. » inspectapedia.com/hazmat ··· #asbceil |

Maybe in the blue prints... I do know the fire alarm was installed in '94 |

It could very well be mineral wool. But the only way to be sure is to send a sample out for testing. |

Because they went above the tiles for the fire alarm system would the tile type be listed on the blueprints? |

You should consider them to be ACM until it's tested. Since they are fire rated, the possibility is definitely there. |

Two choices, first one will simply kick the can down the road.
1) Paint the tile to lock the fibers in place. Friable fiber is the threat for inhalation. Fixed (contained) fibers are safe. Don't move the tiles unless you: 2) Hire an asbestos abatement firm to remove the tiles safely. |

That is "USG ACOUSTICAL PRODUCTS CO." where USG stands for the US Gypsum Company. The company made a number of products containing asbestos (as well as many that didn't). |

Yeah I'm looking at the company website and they have been around for awhile.. Still going to send some for testing first before I go cleaning and vacuuming my office area. |

Look on the building plans (!) and see if there is a specification for the ceiling tiles in the area in question. You'll be looking for something called the 'reflected ceiling plan'. You might also look and see if there any specification books in the old documents. The spec book tells the builders what materials are specified for the project so they can bid on it. |

Yeah I think I saw a book like that but I have to go and look at all of that again..
Trust me when I'm done I'm going to have the blueprints separated by work done. |
