SNOWBELT: What to do w rock saltLive in Chicago. What do I do with 2.5 bags of rock salt. Will it last to next year or clump up into a giant rock? |

Save it, I always do. Any clumping is easily broken up with a hammer. |

If it gets wet or even damp enough it'll clump. Keep them dry they won't. Same as table salt.
As others say, it's still usable if it clumps. Same as table salt. |

I always wrap bags/buckets of the stuff in double garbage bags and store out of the way. It sure doesn't spoil. |

For 2 1/2 bags worth it would be kind of expensive so maybe just use a hammer. I got a few 5 gallon buckets and an airtight lids for $10 each. I put my salt into that so I never have to worry about that problem. » www.homedepot.com/p/Leak ··· 03205720» www.homedepot.com/p/Home ··· 00087613 |

My salt is millions of years old. |

I have a 10 year old open bag. I keep it in a pail in the garage and it's fine. |

I also clean the dregs of the rock salt from my softener once a year and put that in a plastic bag or old pillowcase. It dries over the summer and I either hammer it or just drop the bag on the driveway a few times to make it spreadable. |

Thank you for all of the input. I have one unopened bag and one bucket full with a plastic lid but not airtight lid.
I need to consider my options as space is on a premium too. I wonder if I get the airtight seal and then wrap in two plastic garbage bags and put under the deck will that be ok? |

In the spring, my garage gets as bad as under the deck and the salt survives.
The one that is a killer is CaCl2. Being hygroscopic it can make a real mess. |

for 5 gallon pails, here is a heads up, everything in restaurants comes in them, they will gladly give them to you for free, same ones at as at the lowesdepot |

I toss the opened bag in the corner and ignore it until the next year. It has never been a problem. |
