[DNS] why can't I access nationalgridus.com?

I'm baffled here. Every computer in my house (including tablets and phones connected to my wifi) cannot access nationalgridus.com. It's not blocked in my router or anything. I've tried multiple browsers on multiple pc's. They all either time out or spin their wheels forever trying to connect. I've rebooted everything, cleared everything I can think of to no avail.

If I boot up my work laptop, it can't connect either, unless I sign into my work VPN, then I can connect no problem.

What the heck could cause this? As far as I know, it's the only web site I can't access.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, as you have noted, the site is up as you can connect to it from your work laptop when you VPN into your companies network.

If its a comcast issue, its local to you, as I can open the page without problems.

So, we should probably start with the standard set of questions. Can you post a trace route to the site, so we can see what that looks like?

When I do a ping, I get the following IP back: 148.183.56.53.

What if you put that directly into your browser, to remove any DNS issues.

I do know if I try to ping the site (by name or IP), it does time out. That's not to unusual, as that kind of traffic could be disabled on their end.

Give these things a try, and we'll go from there.

There seems to be an outage through a major provider. Slashdot is also inaccessible.

Thanks Brian, I can't get there via the IP address either.. I guess it does have something to do with this outage:

/. has been unavailable for me since 9am (EDT) when I first tried today. It looks like /. is located in a savvis datacenter.

The individual/regional sites are ok, it's the redirector site that seems to be down/unreachable.
At least that's what I'm seeing from the west coast

Akamai is showing a higher than normal level of attacks in the Chicago area (where I believe the savvis server/route takes you from the NE.

More than likely, you are using one of the transit providers who can still get into their datacenter. It looks like many (most?) transit providers are having difficulty getting into the savvis datacenter.

You are one of the lucky ones.

Here's more info about the savvis issue, from the outages mailing list.

»puck.nether.net/pipermai ··· 884.html

Follow the thread there. It looks like savvis had a major problem.
