[Info] Cisco 3825 - Noise level?

Just curious, those of you that have a 3825, what is the noise level like?

I have a 3845, and it's pretty loud all things considered. I wouldn't want to work next to it for an extended period for example.

Where do you plan on keeping it?

I keep mine in the basement in a rack. Even when I'm next to it, I can just barely hear it. I wouldn't suggest keeping it in your bedroom or a family room.

According to this link, 3825 is little less noisy than 3845

50dba - 58dba range... Which according to this link 60db is equivalent to normal conversation
For the sake of sanity, probably don't want to be around that 24x7x365, RyanG1 See Profile

Unless you are datacenter technician and/or are used to hearing fan noise of thousand fans, which make such noise level acceptable

OP might enjoy it. However the significant other and/or neighbors may have different opinion due to its fan noise

...okay, I'll bite aryoba See Profile , "how would the neighbors have a differing opinion," as it sounds like you have personal, direct experience

Only way I can think of is if you stuck it outside and they considered it an eyesore, or you were piping the fan noise outside for gawd knows what reasons

markysharkey See Profile and TomS_ See Profile may have personal, direct experience. I'm one of the lucky that receive no complains due to my lab's fan noises regardless how loud they are

...think I figured it out... you're in an apartment with crap noise dampening, and the neighbors think your lab's a new furnace / laundry room next door.

Not of the 37xx or 38xx but when my lab is all running I can hear the electric meter whistling. That's the worst noise!

The 37 and 38 series routers are relatively power hungry, and the new 39s aren't any better.
My lab takes 13.6 Amps according to my PDU when under heavy load.

This is why I have ongoing project replacing all noisy lab gears into quiet-to-no-fan newer-model gears where they are also power green. Less power bill to pay, no fan noises, and newer gears sound good enough for me

If anyone think they "must have" medium-size routers such as 3700, 3800, and 3900 series for your home lab; I recommend to think again due to fan noises and power loads. Running SP services IOS images, you can do MPLS on 1841 router. Performance wise? I prefer to go with Juniper SRX 100 or 210 models; capable as firewalls, MPLS and VPLS routers, etc. Running Voice? How about 1861 router instead?

2801 with CME for voice, 4 x 1841's for routing labs and 4 x 2960's for switching. When they're all on it's noticeable, but I live alone and my neighbours stereo drowns out the noise...

May be just me, but a 3825 for THAT price? Pay it, get a set of earplugs, and live with it

After it boots up mine is pretty quiet. My 4948 makes a little more noise than the 3825.

My wife won't complain because the fan noise coming from my home lab sounds like money.

Your fan noise must be sounding like this; "cha ching"

A friend of mine has a 3825 and its probably the quietest thing he has. You'd struggle to know it was on if it didnt have LEDs.

Also dont forget how dBs work. Every 3dB is half or double. 57dB is half as loud as 60dB. 54 half of 57, etc. Same goes the other way.

I have a 3845 and it's likely the quietest thing in my server rack

though sure some day I'd like to have my server rack in a different room but then the silence might keep me awake.
