On a side note, I use the powdered detergents in my front loader as liquid detergents and softeners generally contain animal fat (tallow) or other oils. This is what makes the detergent "thick". When I did use liquid, the residue built up in the drum and grew mildew - a terrible smell.

The washing machine repair person said that liquid detergent wasn't good for our septic tank either. So, I've been using powdered for a few years with no issues.

This is a very controversial subject, liquid/powder, but this works for our household and has kept our septic free from buildup and the washer no longer smells.

My neighbor disagrees with me, but he is the one installing a new drain field this week.
