Will I need a new modem?

I'm using the Motorola surfboard sbg6580 in bridge mode and a asus rt-n66u router, will I need to get a new cable modem for the MAXX speeds?

I'm reading that the surboard only has 8 channels, and wanted to see if TWC would contact me about getting a new modem or if I should just get it myself...

THANKS!

Only if you want the Ultimate 300 package. The modem you have should work with 200 and below.

Yep. Same as jpatton said. The current extreme (or Ultimate 200 when upgrade) plan or below plans will work for your modem and most 8x4 modems. Only if you are going for the the Ultimate 300, then a 16x4 modem is required, like the SB6183.

It was posted in the other thread that TWC changed its mind and will require a 16 channel modem on both the 200Mbit and 300Mbit plans.

Bummer, thanks everyone. It sucks the modem I just bought will not support the 300 speeds. I'm also having trouble finding prices for the sb6183 on amazon, is it not avaible yet?

Lastly in wondering if I should just go back to renting a modem, with so many changes happening with tech all the time. Let me know what you all think!

You could go back to renting if you wanted, at least for now. The SB6183 is not out for retail yet, it'll be out in about 2 months or so, according to rumors.

The few that were seen in this topic here: »[Internet] SB6183, 16x4 modems are here! were obtained from Ebay and were suspected to be stolen, given a close look of the pictures not having the appropriate labels and things for retail sale.

I'm surprised they even worked, or won't end up as bricks at some point.

When the 6183 is out for retail, you'll be able to easily find it at Best Buy or Amazon and it'll be white.

Got a link? I'd like to read that.

The 6183 is not officially released yet -- there are some "engineering" types that have been floating around on Ebay etc.. I think it goes "retail" in June.

It's your call if you want to keep leasing a modem or not.. If you don't plan on updating to the 300/20 tier then there is nothing wrong with say a 8x4 modem such as a 6141... It's your call though -- only you can make that decision.

Remember one of the perks to "leasing" a modem beyond being able to swap it out for upgrades is that if it breaks TWC will replace it.. and you won't have to buy a new modem.

At about $72 plus taxes per year for modem rental, buying isn't much of a risk. You've pretty much paid for a 6141 in 13 months.

Thank you. I'd have to say that not using the 6141 to do 200 is bunk. But I'm on a Comcast system with a 6141 and can't talk much since I don't know specifics between the two systems or what Comcast would do with the Maxx markets once the merger is up. (I believe Comcast will cut 8x4 at 225 and require 16x4-32x8 or better for 250/50 or higher) When a 24-32x8 surfboard or similar modem comes out, I'll be swapping models. I don't plan on doing 16x4 at all. So any speed limits for me won't be an issue. (I'm on Comcast Blast service with a soon to be upgrade of around 125/12.)

Still, I hope that anyone that gets TWC's Maxx service, (Damn, I'd love 200-300 right now), they have a compatible modem and get their full speeds.
