Correction

Verizon has started using the AWS spectrum won at auction years ago to bolster their existing LTE network

The AWS spectrum Verizon is using is the spectrum they bought from the cable consortium in fall 2012. Verizon doesn't have any AWS spectrum they bought "years" ago.

His reference puts it late 2011, that'd be 2.5 years, your guess still puts it at 1.5 years, so "years" is technically correct in either case.

Having said that, I agree the way it was used made me think it's been longer than either number.

Verizon also scooped up a number of AWS licenses from the original auction in 2006 (they bought spectrum covering the eastern half of the US), and then proceeded to squat on them for 7-8 years.

Verizon did not get permission form the FCC to obtain the spectrum until fall 2012.

Besides the fact you're wrong, it does no good for a nationwide carrier to have spectrum that only works in part of the country. Heck they barely had 3G rolled out in 2006 and didn't begin their 4G roll out until late 2010. So your revisionist history is a bit off.

You're going to be one of those who in 2017 will be complaining Verizon hasn't utilized it's 600 MHz it obtain in next years auction. Despite the fact that the FCC gives those TV stations have 39 months to vacate those frequencies.

There's nothing revisionist. Go look at the results of auction 66 (AWS-1). The auction results were released in Sept. 2006. Verizon spent $2.8 billion on the spectrum. They then did nothing with the spectrum until 2013 - 7 years.

Go take your revisionist history somewhere else.

I rarely meet someone who is so consistently wrong. Verizon did buy a lot of AWS 8 years ago and sat on it. Here's the section they bought:
