I wouldn't put it past them.

They already did that, LOL. AT&T was broken up into regional bells who eventually consolidated and bought AT&T Long Distance, and subsequently renamed themselves back to AT&T. Colbert explains it beautifully in this video.

That's a little misleading. It makes it look like AT&T broke up and then all the same companies it broke into just came back together.

Conveniently left out NYNEX and Bell Atlantic which are now Verizon and US West which is now CenturyLink. And Cincinnati Bell which is still independent.
