Yep. The split really taught them a lot.

Like getting to big and breaking up is worth billions more then staying big.
We are still in the getting (too) big stage.

That's a little misleading. It makes it look like AT&T broke up and then all the same companies it broke into just came back together.

Conveniently left out NYNEX and Bell Atlantic which are now Verizon and US West which is now CenturyLink. And Cincinnati Bell which is still independent.
