[speed/latency] Speed keeps slowing downHello,
I have the 3 Mb plan which has been working fine for the past year (before that the line was on the 768k plan for about 8 years). For the last month or so the speed has slowed down quite a bit. A modem power cycle always brings back the 3mb speed, but it will eventually slow down again.
Yesterday I noticed a ton of static on the land line...after which the dsl speed dropped. I replaced the filter for that phone and it seemed to fix the static issue and subsequent phone calls didn't slow down the dsl speed. I was hoping that would fix my issue...however I woke up this morning to a slower speed again.
Could y'all check my stats and let me know what I should try next (ie should I now replace the filter on the answering machine and dvr phone line?)?
Stats with slower speed:
(This slower speed is mild compared to the sub 1000 I was getting before I replaced the phone's dsl filter)

A little variation in margin/speed/Tx/Rx power is normal but in your case it is extremely high.
You need to determine if the static is external to your residence or internal. If it is external will require a FairPoint tech to troubleshoot.
Next time it occurs turn off or disconnect the DSL modem. If static goes away you are seeing an interaction between voice and DSL. If static persists there is a problem with your line unrelated to DSL.
When you get static is it only on one phone or all of them? If they are all affected points to problem outside your residence. If only one is affected may be a bad filter.
Have you changed any phone equipment recently? Double check to make sure every device connected to the phone line, except the DSL modem is behind a filter.
If you have a lot of non-DSL devices it is good practice to install a whole house POTS/DSL splitter. Splitter does a better job isolating DSL from voice and eliminates the need for inline filters at each voice device.

Thanks for your thoughts Tom. The phone equipment has not changed recently...there is only one phone connected, it is a cordless phone that then feeds a second handset.
I will check for static at the NID once I get a replacemnt phone for my electricity free phone that died last year... |

Wireless phones can cause problems with DSL, it is always a good idea when troubleshooting DSL to use a wired phone.
Going to the NID is a good idea, as it disconnects inside wiring, but can be a problem if noise is intermittent.

I second the noise on the lines angle. Keep in mind if you put your Phone line through a surge protector that can also cause oddities.
~3 weeks ago we had a huge windstorm in our neck of the woods, a tree took out our underground service entrance...we had 1 out of 2 phases from the power company, our back gennerator took over power. I had my DSL going NID - Surge protector - DSL modem.. I was on a 7x1 plan, but only getting 1 down, and 512 up. Bypassed the surge and all was good again. |
