The lowdown on DDR4 RAM: When will we see DDR4?

Samsung and a few other chip makers have already started manufacturing DDR4 memory sticks. »www.digitaltrends.com/co ··· -memory/

I am not buying a new build because of DDR4. How about the rest of you?

I wouldn't buy another board specifically for DDR4 but if I were in the market for a new system it very well might be Haswell-E X99 / LGA2011-3 based,.....which uses DDR4. That wouldn't be an upgrade but rather an additional system.

A lot of people with fairly modern systems now may find that by the time they are in the market to upgrade their aging system, DDR4 would have made its way to the mainstream,.....and DDR3 prices would have increased due to manufacturer changeover (low stock in the channel).

I don't expect any performance gains specific to DDR4 though,...

I built my last system near the tail end of the DDR2 cycle and got screwed on the prices for the stuff when I went looking to add more a couple years later. A year ago I built a new system and promptly dumped 24 GB of DDR3 into it to try and avoid that sticker shock again, since I can see DDR4 is coming. Am even thinking of picking up some more as extra stock while it's cheap.

Given the recency of my last build I am not at all concerned with DDR4, but I may try to wait for mainstream availability of it before replacing my aging first-gen Core i5 workstation at the office.

Paying the price premium for DDR4 is pointless if you have a recent system (built within the last year with recently released parts). Hoever, I would suggest picking up the max amount of RAM your board supports so you do not have to pay the premium on DDR3 next year (as Octavean See Profile is talking about).

I seem to recall buying the bulk of DDR3 that I have now when it was at its cheapest. In fact I seem to recall paying about half (possibly less) of what prices are now for a typical DDR3 1600 8GB DIMM. So lets say ~$35 or so. At prices like that I stocked up and bought a bit more then I even needed. My Core i7 3930K based system has 32GB of DDR3 1600 and I have a few DIMMs left over not currently in use (but tested to assure functionality). I could probably put about ~64GB in it now.

Buying a small quantity of DDR4 probably wouldn't be that big of a deal for me depending on prices. However, as I have said I have no illusions about performance gains.

Some of the earliest DDR3 DIMMs I have I bought in small quantities some time before the release of the first Core i7 processors. I was able to use it with a Core 2 Quad Q6600 and a Gigabyte motherboard which supported both DDR2 and DDR3. The RAM is still fine but the motherboard has since failed (partially). Having that DIMM also cut my expenses when I decided to build a Core i7 920 based system. I got a lot of use out of that DIMM which is still in service so I'm not complaining about paying a bit more for it at the time. Probably something like ~$45 for a DIMM,...(forget the capacity,...maybe 1GB).

I upgraded my computer about this time or so last year.. so I'm running DDR3. [It was a DDR 1 system. ] I did however add an additional 4 gig DDR3 stick for $29 - I did check at Newegg.. they wanted about $5 more.

Short of buying several 8 gig ddr3 dimms for about $75 each - the motherboard I have is maxed out..

for just DDR4 no; however, I will probably be using ddr4 this time next year if I can afford to do a rebuild with the 5820k from the haswell e series since they use ddr4.

I'm pathetic. The ONLY computer I have that uses DDR3 and not DDR2 is my laptop which I am currently typing on. Both my desktops are DDR2. Maybe my next desktop won't even have DDR3, maybe I'll go clear until DDR4...
