WinPatrol v31.0.2014 Released

WinPatrol v31.0.2014
June 3rd, 2014

SQLite Database
• Both Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome use a public domain database called SQLite. To properly monitor these and future browsers WinPatrol also uses SQLite, WinPatrol has been using a library SQLite3.DLL, provided by the developers of SQLite. In our new version, we've included the source code for the SQLite functions we need into WinPatrol. Adding the source code directly we have more control over accessing data and can also optimize the code to improve performance. We can also remove any extra code which isn't required so less memory is used.
You may notice in the WinPatrol list of hidden files many files that begin with "etilqs" followed by random characters. These are SQLite files as you may notice etilqs is SQLite backwards.
Pale Moon
• Many browsers use Mozilla as the core of their functionality. Recently, many WinPatrol users have requested support for a Mozilla browser, Pale Moon. This browser will now automatically be detected so cookies stored by Pale Moon will be managed by WinPatrols view cookies and real-time filtering feature.
Pale Moon will also be listed as a browser in the standard WinPatrol Report.
New Icons
• The Scotty system tray icon is easier to see with a new traditional Scotty icon on a blue tile background. The Blue Orb icon introduced when our original icon was hard to view on Vista will no longer be used. This will also mean we won't need the option to use our old traditional Scotty icon.
For anyone with a Start Menu, you'll also find more readable tile icons for WinPatrol, WinPatrol Explorer, Uninstall and Help.
Safe Update Version Info
• Our Safe Update button will now include version information for security programs Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Microsoft Security Essentials where appropriate.
Server Optimization
• WinPatrol v31 now optimizes communication with our server when a severe attack occurs. While WinPatrol will never create enough traffic to hurt your local network our new optimization will make sure you have all the bandwidth you need.

Tray icon not gold

I'd give you mine if I could. Have a blue tray icon for the first time and wonder why it's not gold. WinPatrol was set to display Scotty in the original way prior to this.

Edit: My husband's computer (running Vista) displays the blue tray icon now, too.

According to hayc59 See Profile's original post, everyone should have square blue tray icons rather than gold.

My tray icon is gold too. I don't care as long as Scotty's at work!

Scotty working is definitely the priority. Still, color differences are odd.

I couldn't agree more. However, this statement is odd:
"The Scotty system tray icon is easier to see with a new traditional Scotty icon on a blue tile background."
I'm still wondering where I can find this "blue tile background". Scotty still has this strange gold tile background. Ughh!

FYI:
If anyone sees a post about free WinPatrol PLUS codes, the promotion is bogus. BillP posted the following the Facebook Group:
Thank you Corrine for this info!!

quote:
Recently, there was a lot of confusion when a website in India claimed we were running a promotion that gave away WinPatrol PLUS for free.
The initial link was picked up by many legitimate forums who thought it was true. I tried to post it here but at least Facebook knows to block it.
It used a link that was created to make it easy for one of our partners to create codes. It was really amazing how much effort they put into this bogus site. At least it didn't seem to have dangerous programs included like may of the keygen sites in eastern Europe and Russia but there must be some reason why Facebook blocks it.

As soon as I discovered the site I blocked the creation of the free codes. I also have a record of all the illegal codes that were created and when I get around to it they will be blocked so they don't use resources available to honorable PLUS members.
The damage from this kind of attack is costly including the hundreds of people who emailed me angry when they didn't get their free code. Some even wrote back claiming I was horrible for not supporting the free promotion. So if you heard I was giving WinPatrol PLUS away for free, I wish it could have been true but it wasn't.

I hate the new gold icon but I don't really mind as long as Scotty is always ready to pounce.

FYI: Bill posted on Twitter that "by popular demand the yellow/gold icon will be going away in next release".
