TCW the only company that wants to charge you for using your own MRI just try to hire internet service, and they told me that if I want to use my own wifi motorola sbg65580 have to pay a fee of $ 4.95.
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! |

Your information seems to contradict what is listed here: » www.timewarnercable.com/ ··· dem.htmlIt says there will be a charge when you lease/rent their modem, not when you buy your own. (It also says Los Angeles/New York only, it could be that your local outlet has some different rules). So.... tell us: 1) where you are located 2) who told you there would be a charge? Who knows, maybe your local market does charge for it. But I think it is unlikely to be honest, i think whomever you spoke to just didn't realize there is such a thing as buying your own modem. Also: when you want phone service, you HAVE to rent their modem. |

You don't have to rent you need your own modem and the emta. If you use a emta only for phone there isn't a charge |

I'm in the city of Irving TX,
I Bought a Motorola SBG6580, $ 120.00 this modem is in the list of modems APPROVED by TWC, but they insist that if I want to use the wifi from my own Modem I need pay $ 4.95 a month.
I just talking with another sales rep and tells me the same.
I insist: ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! |

I insist: ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! I hope you didn't use the chat service, they are known to be script readers with absolutely no relevant information besides what is scripted. When you bring your own modem, you should not get charged a monthly fee. Perhaps hobgoblin can shed a bit more light here. |

I had that problem with that modem when TWC took over Insight here. When we had Insight they had a bundle with wifi for no extra charge (Stand Alone Modem and Belkin Router) and there was a line item for Home Networking regardless if you had that hardware or if you had your own stuff.
FastForward to integrating TWC's billing with Insights, and that fee starts getting charged. A simple phone call and they corrected the issue. You do know that wifi is free for wideband services so if you have 30 or 50 meg, there should be no charge regardless if you have their modem or your own. I suspect your on Turbo and the modem wasn't coded as customer owned correctly. |

WHY would you use an integrated Modem/router in the first place ? It's much better to have your own separate router and no chance of needing them to "activate" home networking on your owned router. |

Finally I call national sales center of TWC, they understand that I not have to pay any monthly fee for using my own modem.
But the training their sales staff is really deplorable. |

It is the same to me Timewarnercable wanted to charge me $29.95 for setup my owned ubee modem. It is 100% compatible to timeWarner. .I went online through timewanercable.com and and chatting online with customer service using my owned ubee modem. However I still have to pay installation fee because I am using my own, customer service said. Should I schedule an appointment for a technician come to my house to set up and install my modem. two things:
1) You are allowed to use your own modem in order to avoid a modem lease fee. TWC does not disable features on this hardware, but rather, most likely if the wi-fi will not enable for example, it is likely you have somehow acquired a 'refurbished MSO' model which was never intended to be sold to consumers, and should be replaced by the OEM.
2) the self-install option of connecting your own equipment to an active cable outlet can not be 100% certain because the Tech never actually does work inside your home, but rather simply connects the home to the Tap, checks signal on the line and leaves. Sometimes these self-installs fail and a 'rescue install' is necessary, which will have a cost attached to it because a Tech has to actually verify service inside the home.
There is simply no way to assign paid wi-fi to a customer owned modem. the wi-fi fee is just like the modem lease fee in that it provides you abilities you won't have otherwise such as hardware upgrades and full phone and field-support. |

Yep, and TWC also doesn't push firmware to customer owned modems. So you can change your login password to whatever you like on your SBG6580 and no one can remotely login and change that. In fact, there is a SIGNIFICANT difference between the interface/options of retail 6580s and those TWC leases.
99% of the time you'll get a different answer if you ask the same question when calling 3-5 times.
I'd recommend doing a self-install, where like kba4 said someone hook your coax up to to the tap, and then calling in to tech support to give them the MAC address so they can provision it/get it working. If you notice your modem losing synch a lot or have terrible packet loss/latency along with modem logs showing tons of errors... just call and tell them all of that so someone will come check the line the modem is on. |

They do upgrade my customer owned modem firmware. I had 1.0.6.3 firmware and TWC upgrade it to 1.0.6.8 on my Motorola sb 6121. |

It usually requires tier 3 tech support to fix the billing codes - as this is customer owned vs TWC owned. |

once again, at least in the midwest, there is no way to assign wi-fi to customer equipment. if wi-fi will not enable on a wireless gateway purchased via retail, it is either defective or mislabeled stock intended to be sold to a MSO. |
