Re: Two Fuzzy Headed Babes In Evidence Now

I wasn't set up for a video, but Mama just returned with lunch and I distinctly saw three babies sit up, mouths open, to receive.

Sorry, I got so excited about seeing more than one babe, I took those last three videos without opening the screen door!

They do. I still can't figure for sure how long since they hatched from looking at other robin baby photos.

Papa is helping with the feeding again. I think I heard tiny robin peeps in protest when he finished and left the nest.

I'm counting FOUR little baby beakies! WOW!!!

Mom and Pop Robin must be running ragged, feeding all those little birdies!

I'm positive about 3 but if Jo counts 4, bet she's correct.

Re: [Awww] Robins, a coyotee and, of course, our beloved Helix trolls

I wasn't sure until my daughter looked at those on a much larger monitor than I am currently using. She counted four and it was more clear to me at that point.

Since then I have observed them with binoculars. It kind of throws me off trying to take a video and count babies at the same time, I guess. There are four.

I'll try to get a better video of that tomorrow. Today was their first day sitting up like that. They could only stay up for short sessions and then they flopped over.

I feel like that some days, too.

They look bigger today. I tried to get a video of all four, but can't seem to get an angle where I can see all of them.

They pop up when somebody comes to feed them and mostly flop down again when there is no food.

When a parent is there, the other side of the nest is blocked.

Maybe by tomorrow we'll get to hear their baby songs?

Day 7 Robin Nestlings- July 8, 2014

They are getting too big to all show up on one side of the nest, so I never see all four at once now. Many videos, too many to post, but here are two of my favorites from this morning. They are growing so fast, already in that awkward phase.

I wonder if this is a flight readiness training session, getting those wings ready to fly?

I went outside to take a photo. It was mediocre, but Papa showed up and that caused all the babies to sit up and beg. I think we can be fairly sure of the number of little chickens in there now.

I hear baby birdie cheeps Day 8 Robin Nestlings- July 9, 2014

When Mama Robin feeds the babies, they cheep and chatter. When food is gone, one baby keeps nipping at Mama's feathers.

It is better, yes. It requires a lot more trust from the parentals, though. I am outside, up on a ladder, a little closer to them and nearer their height. Hence the hesitation on their part.

I am only up one step so far, hoping it won't bother them if I go up one more.

The babies are growing so fast. Most say it is 12 to 14 days from hatching to fledgling stage. Happy and sad to think it is nearly over and they will fly away. I may not see them after that. So I'm taking as many videos as I can.

I don't know if they will start another brood. As much as I have enjoyed this one, I will do what I can to gently discourage them doing that here. I am so very far behind on yard work and the 80s and 90s are predicted as far out as the forecasts go. That's going to be hard on me. I may have to mow in the dark with a flashlight.

Re: [Awww] Robins, a coyotee and, of course, our beloved Helix trolls

I'm not fond of wild turkeys, as around here they seem to consider roads to be social gathering areas. On a fishing trip last year, I drove over a slight hill to find 25+ of them in the middle of the road. My car's brakes are good, so I didn't hit any, but it was close enough that I could feel the 'whoosh' of air off the wings of one of them on my arm next to the window as they took off to get away from my car. Hitting a flock of turkeys will tear up the front of your car / windshield / etc pretty well, and that'll ruin a perfectly good weekend.

Day 9 Robin Nestlings- July 10, 2014

I took a video this morning, even though the sun wasn't providing much light to the nesting pooka. I took that primarily because my daughter still wasn't sure she could hear the babies singing. I'll find out tonight.

Early afternoon, the light was better, even though we get the neighbors behind me laughing at their baby. I didn't think you would mind that.

I'll upload the videos in the order I took them. What I noticed today is that feathers have filled in a lot since yesterday, fewer bald spots. Mama appears in the first video, but hesitates again because of me. I am on the second step of that ladder today and she does notice.

When she finally starts feeding she isn't as careful as she is sometimes to try to spread the food around. It appears to me two of the four get it all?

In the second video, I planned to stop recording when Mama left. She waited me out. It was pretty clear she was not leaving until I did. "After you," said the Mama Robin. "ok," said the cowardly human.
