[Internet] Ultimate 50 Laurinburg, NC

Hi,
I've been having trouble with my internet being spotty. It goes in and out at times. (My digital phone also does the same thing, as does my cable on the dvr). I've been running some speed tests with the TWC website on my internet. When I run these tests, I run them from the laptop sitting within 4 feet of the Arris modem/router. There are no other wireless devices connected when I run the tests. These are the results I got over the past 24 hours. Please look at these and tell me if these results are normal?

Download/ Upload
23.44/ 4.22
15.84/5.18
23.30/ 5.26
12.15/4.80
19.45/5.07
36.58/4.28
28.38/4.36
16.63/4.83

I have more if you need them. And, I have the actual screenshots. In addition to these numbers, on the connection graph there are lots of peaks and drops. I don't know what any of this means, but one technician came yesterday and said he didn't know what to do about the phone glitches. One came today and said I'm not paying for 50mpbs, just the 5mpbs and I am getting at/near that (even though I showed him the price difference between Ultimate and Extreme, and the ONLY difference between the two is the download speeds of 50 vs. 30 (not upload speed). He also said I"m going to have problems with the phone line simply because it is digital. Is that true? No one warned me of that before I switched to Time Warner for phone service in January.

Thanks for looking at this. Any information you can give me will be appreciated.

Are you using wifi? Wireless G's "54mbps" is only good to 20-25mbps in practice. You need wireless N to do better.

How would I find that out? I have an Arris TG862 modem/router gateway.

Get better router or plug your computers with ethernet cable.

Any recommendations for a separate modem and router?

SB6141 and I hear good things about the Asus AC1900 series of routers. Never used them, though.

Thanks! From reading some things online that is the modem I was looking at- along with the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 router (I think that may be a diff. router than the one you mentioned??).

SB6180 Modem is a 8x4, not on the approved list from TWC but they activate it via the MAC address and it works.
RT-N66U / RT-AC66U / RT-N16 / RT-AC68U / R7000 / E4200 / WRT1900AC

are all capable of running 50/5 Ultimate easily, those are the most powerful routers that I would recommend.

They all run DD-WRT and TomatoUSB, except for the WRT1900AC as it just came out and it's a OpenWRT router. :P

Netgear makes horrible routers. I recommend to get the sb 6183 in July and also get a linksys wrt1900. If you can't affort it get the asus ac68u

You obviously don't own a R7000...

I have good luck with wireless N, and AC using a TP-Link Archer C7 router and an SB6141 modem. The TPLink is way cheaper than the competition. Using mine for 6 months now with no issues.

They all suck compared to m0n0wall and a enterprise class Cisco AP. ;*)

We're talking about his home.... He'd probably be fine with an E3000 with DD-WRT / TomatoUSB or even a E2000! I'd still recommend at least a RT-N16 due to the 128MB RAM it has plus it's huge Flash memory for firmware.
