any idea what these coax boxes are?

i'm currently in college for network administration, and did an on-site call recently for my part time job. it was a hotel, and these pictures are from the utility room. i was only swapping out an access point, but did notice this line of gray boxes on the wall... they each have 2 coax and ethernet ports, as well as power. looks like the coaxes come into them over ground-block type things..

any idea what they are?

They are blurry and out of focus... They look like some type of MoCA bridge or VOD device... hard to tell.

Cable amps or a hotel VOD service.

They are power injectors for Cisco Aironet wireless devices.

The radios are fed with a pair of coax cables, rather than ethernet cable.

Example model is Aironet 1300: »www.itinstock.com/ekmps/ ··· 93-p.jpg

IIRC they only have a single ethernet port, the other port is for the console.

My guess would have been that they are satellite internet modems, but obviously that would've been incorrect.

I think TomS_ got it right on the money.

I'm pretty sure they are power/ethernet injectors for outdoor AP's

Leave it to Cisco to do things "differently".

do you like ubiquiti stuff? i've got one of their EdgeRouter Lites. It's alright, but i'm finding the QoS capabilities a bit limited, and the VPN performance quite low. Curious as to how their wireless products are

Depends on how many users you have really, and what your specific needs are.

I've been to a few red roof inn sites that use these. I think they were part of a wifi network deployment that was once managed by t mobile.

Red Roof Corporate used to handle all of the voice for the hotels. Then about 3-4 year ago they put that responsibility on the hotels either because they didn't want to fool with it anymore or maybe because they sold a bunch of them off. Anyways they all had pretty much the same setup. T-Mobile Managed WiFi, Adtran TA908E fed with T1(s) that were probably part of an MPLS network that fed a horrible piece of shit Hitachi PBX. Most of the ones I supply service to have dumped the Hitachi's as they suffer major failures or lighting strikes.

Love them... We have had 0 issues... my core network is still Cisco however... I just use the Ubiquiti for wireless point to point and wireless AP's

for me ubnt support has been quite amazing, there they pay extremely high level employee's to help users like me on forums.

my experience with ubiquiti has been nothing short of great.

Good luck if your network is down and you are in dire need of assistance.
