[DSL] DSL Modem & Router ConfigurationI was recently told to make a change to the DSL modem connection settings to diagnose a connection problem.
I was told to put the modem in non-bridged mode, Routed PPP. So the login process is done in the modem, as opposed to the router.
So my question is how am I supposed to configure the WAN/Internet port on the router. Before the change I set the router to PPPoE. Now that the modem is Routed PPP, what should the WAN/Internet be? DHCP?
I am asking because DHCP is working, but I am getting more random disconnects, so I am trying to see if the Routed PPP or Bridge mode will fix connection issues. |

if you're troubleshooting, just disconnect your router from the modem and connect your computer directly to the modem.
also when you say disconnecting, are you losing sync or losing a PPPoE session? |

also when you say disconnecting, are you losing sync or losing a PPPoE session? I cannot directly connect as there are other people in the house who need to use the internet. By disconnecting I am just not being able to access any sites, online games kick me off for being offline, that sort of stuff. I know for certain, that after setting the modem to Routed PPP I am getting more frequent disconnects, every few hours than when not in Routed PPP which is much harder to diagnose. Those appear much less frequent. So I want to see if maybe my WAN setting on the router is causing a problem, but I can't leave the router cable unplugged as others need to use the internet. I just want to verify the WAN setting to see if it is correct. |

if you can't troubleshoot it, then yeah set the router's wan to DHCP.
you should ask TSI to check your line stats to see if you're disconnecting and if you're PPPoE session is dropping. |

you should ask TSI to check your line stats to see if you're disconnecting and if you're PPPoE session is dropping. When I first called they said the upload was unstable, so they increased my download and lowered the upload. That solved the problem initially but I still got frequent disconnects. I called in a few more times afterwards and they say the line is fine, no problems. They even suggested switching out the phone cord and changing the filters. Right now I left the WAN as DHCP and disabled the routers DHCP and just get IPs from the modem just as it mentions in the last post here: » superuser.com/questions/ ··· he-modem since I may be having a double-NAT issue. After doing that I still get disconnects, but when I rush to connect to the modem directly the connection is fine, which leads me to suggest there is a problem with the router. |

it doesn't sound like the line is fine if they're suggesting to change phone cables and filters.
i'd suggest posting in the direct forum and asking for you line stats and pppoe session log and post them here. |

Heya! I'd definitely like to take a look over your account and see if we're noticing anything, though you may be correct in the router being part of the problem. I'd also like to see if we can get your profile to its full settings - lowering your profile isn't something we like doing aside from a last-ditch effort or a temporary band aid solution if you don't have time for troubleshooting. Either way, please give us a shout in the » /fo ··· avdirect forum and we'll be glad to take a look. Thanks, TSI Kris |

I contacted tech support and we discovered that unplugging the phone line from the DSL modem got rid of the noise on the phone line.
I already installed new filters but the technician believef that the modem might be causing noise issues due to a fault. The modem is almost 3 years old so it might just need to be replaced.
I bought a new modem to replace the aging SpeedTouch modem and everything seems to be working fine for now. |

make sure you ask support to set your profile back to what it can support, they likely brought it down in speed because of the issues originally.
while i'm glad it's fixed for you, it's disappointing support had you mess around with your router and things when it's clear that it was a line issue which they can see using the Bell tools. |

If you're going to use the modem-router in NAT router mode, you should not use the WAN port on your router, and the router's DHCP server should be disabled. Plug the modem into the LAN side of the router, and use your router as a switch and wifi bridge. |
