Re: [Channels] September and October Channel Changes

Cool! Thanks!!! I'll check it out...one thing I like about NHKWorld is that they close caption pretty much everything unlike the other MHz offerings so I'll keep my fingers cross that TV Japan might do that also...

Opps! Just saw matcarl's post...oh well...nevermind...'-}}

Later Edit: I can get both channels...no closed captioning (english or japanese) but the program that's on right now is less than 15minutes and they don't close caption on NHKWorld for short programs so I'll check longer program but I suspect there is no closed captioning for any of the programming on these channels...

Can tune to Nick jr HD 756 and to 503 MeTV HD and 3 SD in VHO 5. The sd feed on 19 MeTV is still there with different programming. Somebody got there wish. Not in guide, I actually changed to it by mistake.

That doesn't sound right. MeTV doesn't have a HD feed.

I believe the new MeTV affiliate (WJLP) is upconverting to 720p - and in doing so, is cutting off the top and bottom of the 4:3 content so that it fills a 14:9 frame (i.e. half way between 4:3 and 16:9).

The audio on channel 3 sucks, worse than an AM radio, and so far all infommercials. Ch 19 still has ME TV programming. Is this what you guys were waiting for? Another bad audio channel with infommercials?

TV Japan is in the International Package, you have to pay for it.

Interesting enough - I get both 1769 and 1770 (I'm assuming w/ Ultimate). Yay - another HD for me. LOL.

As far as the ME TV channel - we've had it here out of Delaware / Philly for awhile. The PQ and audio are downright horrible. It's like a high school A/V club is doing the work. Get used to it.

TV Japan has a free preview from October 15-31. The channel is normally $25 a month

Thanks Mat. All these Free Previews - you'd think there would be a mass PR from Verizon touting these.

Can anyone in VHO7 confirm if ch 503 is active?

I have been watching it over the air and the PQ is just fine. I'm not sure what video format it is but there is basically a 1-inch border on the left and right sides of the screen (no border on the top or bottom of the screen). Is that how Verizon is showing it?

I'm in VHO5, but yes, that's how they are showing it right now because it's all SD programs at the moment, all SD infommercials.

Thanks for that list. Makes me realize how pleased I am with the channels they do offer in HD, since there's only one - maybe two - channels on that list that I would ever watch.

A compromise situation would be to carry those channels in 16:9 mode.

But still 480i? That's a compromise? You would be stretching the artifacts.

I would remove all the kids channels from the list. There is no reason to waste bandwidth on HD programming for 3-year-olds. I don't think they care if Doc McStuffins is in HD or not.

He made a list of all available HD's (not including premiums), let's not cherry pick on the kids or religious or sports or news outlets you may not be interested in. He made a great comprehensive list. Plus he didn't say Verizon should include them, he merely pointed it out for all to see.

I didn't include Gol or Playboy, etc. because I consider them premium, as you need a separate package to get them.

I didn't forget Sí TV - Sí TV was rebranded as NuvoTV in 2011, which I have on the list.

As for missing premium HDs, I believe these to be:

Cinemax:
- ActionMax West
- ThrillerMax West

Encore:
- Encore Action
- Encore Black
- Encore Classic
- Encore Suspense
- Encore West

Epix:
- Epix West
- Epix 3 (not carried in SD either)

MoviePlex:
- IndiePlex
- MoviePlex (not carried in SD either)
- RetroPlex

(The) Movie Channel:
- Movie Channel West
- Movie Channel Xtra West

Showtime:
- Sho Beyond
- Sho Beyond West
- Sho Family Zone
- Sho Family Zone West
- Sho Next
- Sho Next West
- Sho Women
- Sho Women West

Starz:
- Starz Cinema
- Starz in Black
- Starz West

Other:
- GOL
- Playboy TV
- Playboy TV en Español

I didn't post this initially as I'm less certain about whether I'm missing any channels from the list.

Proper 16:9 480i actually looks reasonably OK. Check Bloomberg on channel 104. The keys are not letterboxing it and not re-digitizing the shitty NTSC analog downconversion (in other words, don't do what Fox does). The problem is that the digital adapters are junk and can't handle it, so it would still require wasting space on duplicate channels. Not sure if the 2500 boxes can handle it or not.
