The problem raised by the article is not the lack of consumer acceptance, but how very few AAA studios want to work with Cryengine, due in part to the high licensing fees.

This is what can really kill a game engine and likely why Source has been so successful for Valve. afaik Valve does not charge a first born for use of the Source Engine.

Valve and Epic gave Source and Unreal Engine 3-4(respecievely) really good license agreements, and mod tools to boot. Reasonable fees and mod tools to get people used to them before you buy them really work great for engines. Something crytek doesn't do.
