Thanks all. Here's my trace route (at 9:30 am, so hardly prime time, but still):
1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms Wireless_Broadband_Router.home [192.168.1.1] 2 8 ms 6 ms 7 ms L100.NYCMNY-VFTTP-84.verizon-gni.net [96.250.0.1] 3 12 ms 11 ms 9 ms G2-3-2-2.NYCMNY-LCR-21.verizon-gni.net [100.41.195.18] 4 8 ms 10 ms 11 ms ae5-0.NY325-BB-RTR1.verizon-gni.net [130.81.163.208] 5 24 ms 12 ms 11 ms 0.so-0-0-0.XT1.NYC4.ALTER.NET [152.63.1.41] 6 57 ms 44 ms 44 ms 0.ae1.GW9.DFW7.ALTER.NET [140.222.230.19] 7 48 ms 46 ms 51 ms netflix-gw.customer.alter.net [152.179.187.202] 8 46 ms 46 ms 46 ms ipv4_1.lagg0.c174.dfw001.ix.nflxvideo.net [198.45.54.223]
If I'm reading this right, the route is Dallas -> NYC -> me, with no intermediaries between Netflix and Verizon other than alter.net. What is alter.net? |

Alter.net is also known as Verizon Business. So, in essence - yep, you're on a direct connection. VZ took advantage of their business fiber to hook up with Netflix. |

9ms to Philly - HAPPY! Philly Peer |
Damn - things are definitely stabilizing - 9ms to my peer in Philly. Full HD... |

Ran another test this morning. Now the 7th consecutive day of hitting the peer in Philly. Don't want to jinx it - but we may have made it! LOL. |

Re: [Networking] 1st Proof of Verizon / Netflix Direct Peering????Renewed my subscription this evening to find out if direct peering has actually taken hold. I haven't hit any HD content yet; but the episode of Family Guy I hit started playing instantly with 0 buffer and in seriously good quality.
Here's a tracert:

Not trying to jinx it - but I think we're set here in the Delaware area. Decided to restart my love of Breaking Bad last night - watched 3 episodes on my Apple TV - used the test clip - it actually STARTED at 5800 - which is their Super HD. The PQ was stellar. I couldn't be happier again. Not thinking about canceling my subscription anymore. |

My bandwidth meter registered 8mbps on the initial buffer. After about 2 minutes...it did drop..however I was watching it and occasionally it'd peak up to fill in. As far as the price increase. That already has happened. It started when they split the streaming off from discs. If I want to add disc service...it's another $7/month for DVD and $9 for blu-rays. HD streaming I think is a couple bucks more, $11.99/month fo r "Ultra HD"/4K. |

Considering the alternatives I'm surprised Netflix wasn't $19.99 per month from the get-go. |

said by dewdude:As far as the price increase. That already has happened. It started when they split the streaming off from discs. Right, but one way to look at it is that Netflix was subsidizing the cost of streaming initially, when (a) they had to convince the content providers to allow it, and (b) far fewer people had the high-bandwidth internet connections required to support it. Throwing in streaming along with a subscription to disc service was an incredibly astute business decision: it got a *lot* of people to try it out, and has had the effect of both prodding content providers to let Netflix buy streaming rights and prodding consumers to obtain higher bandwidth connections. Now that these are both well underway, naturally Netflix no longer needs to offer streaming at promotional rates and they are charging what they think the market will bear. |

Re: 9ms to Philly - HAPPY!Hello from your Philly neighbor I was wondering if you could if you could do me a fave and in layman's terms tell me how bad or good this trace to Netflix is. I noticed there are a lot of timeouts, which I'm assuming aren't good. Thanks! tracing to the main website doesn't tell you anything, that's not from where the video is streamed |
|

lol feel a little silly now. Thanks for letting me know. |

Krypto- Never feel silly! Even though this thread is getting big, read through it and it will tell you how to tell whether you're on a Mac or a Windows computer. |

Re: [Networking] 1st Proof of Verizon / Netflix Direct Peering????Is Netflix's CDN routing affected by the DNS server you use? I'm not a Netflix user but some in the household are, so I better ask, wifey might not cook dinner. |
|
guppy_fish Premium Member join:2003-12-09 Palm Harbor, FL |
No. DNS is for when your computer is looking for something, when the data is coming the other way, its up to the sender what the route will be |
|
1 edit |
So, if you click for a movie title the DNS server doesn't look for the nearest/closest Netflix CDN? If not, who determines the nearest/closest CDN server for us? |

When you click, that is an application on the Netflix server which decides on their end how to send the movie stream to your device based on IP address which it already has. DNS is never used in this process |
|

Okay, I think I understand it now. Thanks. |

Seems I am FINALLY seeing a direct connection again. All day today it has been full HD, very fast ramp-up.
I'm directly connecting to NYC. |
