Old-School networking gear? What is this? |
It looks like a Token Ring hub, but I'm not 100%. |

The top thing with the VLT display is a modem. » www-01.ibm.com/common/ss ··· ocale=enI suspect from its age, its how this token network connected to other networks or perhaps even the Internet. The next box down is an IBM 8230 Model 2 Central Access Unit, it connects and minds over the LAM's. Finally are the LAM (Lobe Attachment Modules) which connect to the workstations via the ports on the front of each unit. Are they still using this stuff? |

Modern stuff right there, if this was the early-mid 90's. |

The guys in the circle are passing around a joint, see the first guy, and say to him 'come join our token ring.'" *ba-dum TIS!* Regards |

The problem with token ring jokes is you need to wait your turn to laugh. |

Well the pic was taken on 3/3/2014 at 2:08 PM with a Galaxy Note II (international version, GT-N7105)...
Edit: ok, so I was wrong about it being a local gov't. Looks like a Sears in Billings, Montana.

Something like this being found in a Sears does not surprise me at all lol. They probably still consider it modern technology! |

Hey, if it works, don't fix it.
I would've been more surprised if it had been in a government building (except maybe the military). A retailer doesn't surprise me. I worked at a walmart in college and the systems in the back office were from the day the store was built 20 years earlier. Only things that broke or for new functionality were added or swapped.
When you have as many old locations as companies like Sears and Walmart do, you don't just go rip stuff out because it's "old" |

Ya, it was at the local Sears. The darn thing was still powered up, but had a rather recent series of Cisco switches installed in a different cabinet, so they upgraded awhile ago and left the old stuff to rot.
I was like "Um.. Is this thing still in use?"
Just the size of the cable amazed me. I wonder what gauge of cable they used back then and how well shielded it was.
BTW: My Note II is a SGH-I317 running DN3 v5. It just says it's a N7105 for some strange reason. |

I was going to say Sears but someone beat me to it. Blackbox and some various other companies did a large MPLS roll out few years ago to update the network. |

IBM Type-1 cable...
Should be 2 pairs of 22 ga, the pairs are shielded, then the cable is shielded.
I installed tons of it, doing structured cable at IBM offices back in the mid-late nineties... |

IBM Token Ring transmission, which was standardized as IEEE 802.5 in 1985. Cabling for the Token Ring network consisted of "IBM Type 1" cable mated to unique hermaphroditic connectors. IBM Type 1 cable consists of 2 loosely twisted, foil shielded, 150 ohm pairs surrounded by an overall braid. » www.siemon.com/us/standa ··· tory.asp |
