[OS X] Antivirus or Anti-Spyware?

I'm using Avast on my iMac at home and thinking of putting ClamXav on my macbook.
What is everyone else running ?

I used to run Sophos, but it noticeably slowed me down with Mavericks. I now run nothing, and just use common sense when browsing.

I have been using both ClamXav and Sophos on our late 2009 iMac for at least 4 years now and no issues. Might just take them off and see if things run faster, although I have not noticed any issues.

Avast really messed up my email (infinite attachment download loops) and corrupted my Time Machine backups. I run nothing now and am much happier.

I use Sophos; have not noticed any slowdowns or other issues.

Got a bunch of spinning beach balls when I had Sophos installed. Can't say if it was directly correlated, but, the freezes stopped when I removed Sophos.
With the sophistication of modern day threats, common sense might not be enough.
If you're concerned, and well you should be, slowness or sluggishness might be an acceptable tradeoff, then again, for most here...it's not.

My mid-2010 Macbook Pro running Mavericks has had ClamXav installed on it for three years. In all that time it's been run (as opposed to having it run constantly), minimizing any system resource hit.

No complaints at all. I highly recommend it.

Avast has detected plenty of infected files from iMail in my Gmail accounts.
I've also noticed less spam, but I still do my monthly routine to empty, clear, cookies, browser history, etc in chrome, firefox and safari.

I actually have had some performance issues with my iMac and experimentally removed Sophos from it yesterday. Night and day...which is disappointing. Fortunately, I'm a careful user so I'm going to go without for a bit. If I feel I need something, I'll try a different product.

i run my mid-2011 i7 mba and my late-2013 15" mbpr naked. i've been running naked macs for as long as i can remember.

i do keep myself safe (java, flash updates) -- and run a linux vm in its own container if i need to do something shady -- but it works for me.

Running Avast on my iMac but just read a review some ppl reporting Avast can slow the system down, debating on putting Avira instead.

Avast scans system, web and emails not bad

I waiting for the latest comparative and ranking to be posted here:

Based in this fresh data, then I will choose my mac protection software accordingly.

• They claim it will be released very soon, any day now. By August 27th at the very latest.

"Andreas Clementi (AV-Comparatives) -- 06 Aug 03:41
Hi,
it will be released when everything is done (translated, proof-readed, revalidated, etc.). No fixed date yet, but expected to be within 1 to 3 weeks, within August.
regards, andreas"

Ugly -- 06 Aug 01:38
Huh? “Some few.” I do not mean to be rude.
Yet I do not understand what this means. ~ Is it by end of August?

Few -- fyoo/
adjective & pronoun
1. a small number of. "may I ask a few questions?"
synonyms: a small number, a handful, one or two, a couple, two or three;
not many, hardly any. E.g., "there weren't many biscuits, but we saved you a few"

Andreas Clementi (AV-Comparatives) -- 06 Aug 01:11
Hi,
it is going to be released in some few weeks.
regards, andreas"

I have ClamXav installed but I only run it once a month or so. I never leave it running in the background

so far so good, i've actually noticing less spam mails now

wish there was a spyware detector instead, since i know a/v is overkill for us at the moment

Well, now ya got me thinking. I'm no expert on this sort of thing.
Hence, the Av-comparatives.org reference.

tubbynet See Profile may be the best person to ask about this idea.
Say that one runs a VM (does not matter the OS or emulator sw).

Does closing that virtual environment kill all nasties? ~OR~ are they restored upon reopening the emulator and OS at any later date? I dunno.

If the answer is nasties are restored, along with everything else, then perhaps keeping a pristine image somewhere and replacing the entire install is preferable to reinstalling, as the latter approach will be much more effort to restore/reinstall software, favorites, preferences, and so forth...

Therefore, not to veer off topic, but as a last resort in the case that a nasty virus or spyware has infected the puter, what is a good mac-compatible imaging sw? Thanks!

Obviously, the Apple Time Machine has back-ups. But restoring one of these will just reinfect with the aforementioned nasty and achieves nothing at all.

I don't waste my time or CPU cycles.

Haven't had a virus scanner since my BBS checked uploads.

Blah.

PS - imagine software, use Carbon Copy Cloner. Accept no substitute. Well, except for SuperDuper!

Ever use either?
Any good reason to prefer one over the other please?

I've been using CCC for, what, 13+ years now? Works great, never let me down.

I hear good things about SuperDuper! too, but never had a reason to move away from CCC.

a virtual machine is just that -- a virtual machine.
things don't magically happen differently just because the machine is virtual. if you run windows and step in some shit -- that shit will still be on your shoes until you clean it off. its recommended to run an a/v in your windows vm for that reason -- you're not immune from shit and it won't go away just by restarting.

I went with the ESET product for my new MBPr.
I've used ESET many years on my Windows box with excellent results. So that was an extra incentive.

Overall, I was expecting the ESET to do well, but the list of qualified & recommended vendors was somewhat fewer than I expected. The report is tough but fair. There are a few other good ones, like but not limited to BitDefender and Kaspersky.

Go and D/L the report. It's only a few pages and very informative.
I do not regret the time invested to learn about this before purchase.
And FREE is always good!
