Setting up surround sound with AV receiver through my TVI just bought a 10 year old AV receiver: yamaha htr-5640 » ec1.images-amazon.com/me ··· 8501.pdfMy TV is a 2013 Insignia NS-39D400NA14 » www.manualslib.com/manua ··· a14.htmlI also have a directv (non HD) receiver in the mix The AV receiver does not have hdmi, but does have an optical jack that says dvd, but it seems (from what the manual says) I can reassign it to a TV. If I can, then take an optical cable from there to the TV optical jack, will I get the 6.1 surround sound, or not? Wondering if running a coaxal cable from the directv to the tv will negate the 6.1 and just give out the 2 channels. The directv receiver does have a usb jack as does the TV I don't actually have the surround speakers or the optical cable yet. I'd like to know if it should work first. Thanks for any time folks can give me! |

First of all you provided a unsuable link to a local file, but that doesn't matter currently.
If you're using coax from the box you're not going to get surround anyway. The best bet would be to change the input as necessary on the receiver. You have three optical inputs on the back, use them. You even have a digital coax input. Nobody has a md/cd player anymore so use the md/cd input if you're actively using the dvd input, and just play cds on your dvd player like I do.
If your cable box has no digital sound outputs then get another box, or deal with the stereo sound, along with non-hd picture. |

Thanks Zeus. I fixed the link. The directv box isn't HD. Does that mean it can't do digital audio? I might just go the cheap route and not have digital sound, and not pay for the HD directv extra monthly charge. |

Actually look at your box please. I know that sd channels can carry surround as on cable I was able to get surround from some movie channels when I had a sd cable box, but if the provider is converting a hd channel down to sd like your local channels you'll find the surround has been stripped.
We have a hd box for cable at the moment, and watch almost entirely hd channels. It does make a difference for picture quality unless they are just up scaling old content, and can make a major difference is sound. There's only a small handful of channels we might watch that are only available as sd, and some channels are only available as hd. |

There are rca jacks from the directv that could get me better sound than coax cables. direct is saying with the D12 receiver that I can get dolby 5.1 surround sound (capable). Best to go from D12 to AV receiver with the RCA cables, or D12 to TV with RCA cables, then optical cable from TV to AV receiver? |

rca is not digital audio unless you're confusing it with a digital coax output, just go with the coax to the tv. Even my old sd cable box had optical out. |

Whats the model number of your Direct TV reciever?
And I think the receiver's output is analog only, as per note on page 12 of manual. Thats the main difference between the 5640 and the 5650.
"Connect the input jacks on your CD recorder or MD recorder to the MD/CD-R OUT (REC) jacks for analog recording. Connect the output jacks on your CD recorder or MD recorder to the MD/CD-R IN (PLAY) jacks to play a source from your recording component." |

If you want true surround sound, you would need to feed the audio signal from the DirecTV box all the way to the Yamaha either in digital format, or in multi-channel analog. (I've never seen a DirecTV box with multi-channel analog out) So you really only have the option for digital.
You would need to use HDMI, Optical, or Digital Coax. (looks like a single RCA plug) Anything else, such as the red/white RCA jacks, or normal coax, is going to downmix to 2 channel stereo before going over the line.
It would also be best to connect that digital line straight from the DirecTV box to the Yamaha, as looping through the TV will likely cause a 2 channel downmix as well, even on the TV's digital output. |

The model # on the directv receiver is D12-100 » support.directv.com/app/ ··· -manuals |

That is useless as it doesn't show us the outputs you actually have. If it's this model then no, you have no digital outs, you need to get a better box, or just actually get an hd box while you're at it. » www.abt.com/product/4299 ··· D12.htmlThis model has optical out » videocitydfw.com/directv-d12/ |

said by froehlich:The model # on the directv receiver is D12-100 Does it look like the one in the link below? If so, it looks only to have optical SPDIF out and the yamaha htr-5640 only has coax SPDIF input. Also your TV only has optical SPDIF OUT and not IN, so you cant even go direct from DTV receiver to TV for Dolby. So two choices would be to get a new DTV receiver with Coax SPDIF or get a new surround sound system that accepts optical SPDIF inputs. Other than that, with current equipment, you could go composite (RCA) from DTV receiver to stereo receiver and that would atleast give you better sound then the TV speakers most likely. » videocitydfw.com/directv-d12/::Edit:: Word correction |

For your information, SPDIF is all digital regardless of optical or coaxial. |
